What dream did you leave behind?

Today I got to thinking about my life and the choices I have made. I have no complaints, in fact I have had a very good life so far, but I got to thinking about the dreams that I never followed.
For example, I once dreamed of being a veterinarian, but I thought the science would be too difficult.. Later, I had dreams of becoming an imagineer (this dream has never really died). Thinking about those old dreams wasn't sad, it was more of a way to see what I thought was important in my life back then vs what is important now. In any case, dreams have a funny way of coming back as reality when you least expect it

So tell me, what dreams did you once dream of that you have left behind?

I was actually living my dream and was actively working with dolphins in a research setting. Now I'm a WAHM and I couldn't be happier. I miss dolphins of course and just melt everytime I see them but I can't imagine not living my current life either.

Someday I would like to volunteer at the zoo here perhaps or be involved again in marine mammal science but if it never happened I wouldn't feel my life wasn't full. It is a hard career and if you are on the research end of it, the paychecks aren't big. It is almost a calling rather than a career and Chris would never find IT work in the keys or islands. Realistically, it isn't happening but I sure miss those guys!

A third child

DH was an only and agreed to two, but really didn't feel a need for #3. I still look longingly at babies, but I guess I'll just be waiting for a grandchild one of these years (not too soon I hope).

I have wanted to be an Egyptologist since third grade but life got in the way. I went to nursing school because I knew I could support myself doing that. I have books about ancient Egyptian culture and architecture that I sometimes drag out,and I never miss a Discovery channel special. Good thing I didn't pursue that field- Egypt is not a good place to be in now!

I was going to be a meteorologist, but college calculus got in the way of that dream. I did go into broadcasting, but was never the weatherman that I dreamed of becoming. I am still really into weather and try to read as much as I can about it. I just couldn't get past the tough math classes to get a degree in it.

And on a side note,

Egypt is not a good place to be in now!

One of my best friends is an archivist who now works in Egypt at the American University in Cairo. He e-mails me about his experiences often. I worry about him, but he is following his lifelong dream and could not be happier with his life. He tells me that his experiences have been incredibly positive and that the Egyptian people have been nothing but nice to him since he got there.

Well I've been out walking
I don't do that much talking these days
These days--
These days I seem to think a lot
About the things that I forgot to do
For you
And all the times I had the chance to

Dreams: Guess I've always wanted to be a gourmet chef, but when I think about it I would never want to put the hours into cooking in someone's eles's kitchen. So I taught myself to cook gourmet.

A master gardener would be an awesome profession. Wait a minute, would I have time to do any gardening in my own yard.

A artist probably one of the things I've dreamed about my whole life. Do I draw or paint, I dabble. Can I draw or paint, no, but I dabble anyways.

I could go on and on. Probably the one thing I've never dreamed about has been the most rewarding in my life. Thats being a Wife, Mother and Grandmother.

I may have dreams, and at 56 years old I still have dreams. I learned to take each dream as a challenge, buy a few books, read about your dream, maybe take a class or two, and then go out and do it.

I don't think I ever have a professional title to go with my dreams, but I'll never stop dreaming. Isn't that what lifes about.

I always dreamed of having 3 children. But I have such sick pregnancies, and such a hard time bouncing back, I only have 2 kids. I feel blessed, though.

Also, when I was little, I wanted to be a lawyer. I never pursued it, and now I wish I had. I've always loved teaching, though, so I've never regretted that career choice.

I wanted to be a dancer in WDW since I was 14. Maybe someday.;)

My unfulfilled dream is for me to actually read a thread starter post properly and then respond correctly!

Yep, I've done it again, I completely misread the starter post and responded with a couple of fulfilled dreams DOH

I'm sorry WDWHound, I messed up and I've now deleted my post to put things back on track, so hopefully no one will be mis-led by me.

Arrrrrgh - there's no hope for me! ;)

I always wanted to be a nurse. It was my dream as a little girl but my life took a different turn. I don't regret the choices I made in my life, but I still wish I was a nurse!

I wanted to work for the CIA, as a linguist....not sure where that dream ever came from..but I remember always wanting to do that "when I grew up"

I guess when I grow up, I can decide what I want to be...for now, I'm happy being me.

Being 5' 10'' tall and model like at 5'4" and 40y/o I think I am done growing - in fact I think I may be getting shorter!;)

Seriously - I am happily married two beautiful children a wonderful home safe neighborhood both DH and I have Secure jobs - A great dog BJ and Funny cat Lenny - everyone is basically healthy(DH is getting knee surgery soon but will be 100% after!), far from wealthy but doing well

All I need is to put a white picket fence up and my dreams have all come true!:D

I always wanted to be a Broadway-type singer/dancer. I guess because I always have loved watching musicals, that I thought it would be fun to perform in them, too! However, I can't sing worth beans, and certainly don't have (and never have had) a dancer's body, so I'll stay in the audience and applaud like crazy!

There are certain things I have wanted in life, knowing full well I would never get or achieve, those are the hardest to think about. My biggest dream was to be a mom, and t be honest it was the best dream, and still is, everything else is secondary :)

I always wanted to be a train engineer.

This may be a dream realized as I know eventually we're going to move to Orlando and I will try to be an engineer with the WDW railroad. That would really be a dream come true.

Always wanted to be a doctor in an emergency room. That was the main dream.

The next one was to be a chef. But now that I cook all the time I'm gald I didn't choose that one.

The next was to be a travel agent, but they don't make enough $$$$$, but I love planning trips for people.

Also, at one point in my life I was going to be a minister, that was during my religious phase.:D

No apology necessary. I enjoyed reading about your fulfilled dreams while they were here.

Thanks to everyone who has posted here so far. I'm glad that this thread has not been a sad one (though a few of the posts here have tugged at my heart). I've always had more dreams than I could possibly chase (the two I lister in my first post were from the top of a very long list). I still value the dreams I never followed as much as the ones that I went after. They are a part of who I am.

Of course, its never to late to review that dream list and start after another dream. Heck, Disney was planning EPCOT and DisneyWorld up until the day he died. That man never forgot a dream. He just put them on a list in his head and when one dream was accomplished, he selected another one from the list. We will probably never know how many dreams he didn't get to, but you can you can bet they all played a part making the dreams he did create a reality.

When I was very young a wanted to be a defense attorney, then I grew up and saw who they defended. After that I wanted to be a prosecutor, but that didn't last long.Being a child advocate was high on my list,or working in a battered women's shelter/hot line.

On the fun side, archaeology has always fascinated me too.

What am I now?A cafeteria aide. Not so fulfilling but it's the same schedule as my kids.Who knows, maybe some day....Are there tough math courses involved in this profession?Hope not or I'll never get there ;)

To try and make it as a singer or actress(it has not died yet)
