My 11 yr old is developing some smallish pimples and I want to get her started on taking care of her face before it really gets going. What is there out there these days that is not too harsh? She has very sensitive skin.

She could try just washing her face with a product such as neutragena acne wash or clean and clear acne wash (not sure of the exact name, but both clearly for acne). They both are used daily to wash the face and contain salicylic acid, which is the ingredient that helps acne. If her acne is really mild that might be all she needs...

Our Doctor recommended Dial soap for DS to wash his face with. It cleared up really well.

My son uses a product I read about on here. It really is great stuff. He is not a skin care guy- but he'll use this(in private of course:rotfl2:)

My DD14 has a pretty good case of acne, mostly on her forehead. We have tried Proactive. . .didn't work, and now she's on a prescription from her MD. It helped at first, but now not so much. I don't know if I should insist they refer her to a dermatologist. :confused3

If this stuff really works, I would be willing to give it a try. I feel for the girl. . .pretty face. . .bad skin. :(

If it's hormonal, there might not be much you can do about it except wait for puberty to pass, but my doctor recommended a gentle face wash like Cetaphil, and the lowest dose benzoyl perozide cream - I think Neutrogena has a 2.5% cream for everyday use (On the Spot?). The normal 10% that most benzoyl peroxide creams come in can be just too harsh for everyday preventing breakout use. Also making sure to change the pillow case often can help.

If it's really bad, you can also try cutting back on dairy. I've read some studies about how the hormones in milk can contribute to acne, and at least anecdotally for me, I find the less dairy I consume, the better my skin is (which is hard, because I love cheese and ice cream).

My 10 year old uses a face wash once a day with Salycidic Acid in it (forget the brand right now). That seems to help, without being too drying and she's prone to dry skin on the rest of her body. In the shower, she just uses Cetaphil or regular old Dial soap.

Of course, at that age, the biggest challenge is just getting them into the habit of washing their face every morning and night. I think doing that with just about any soap is the first step and helps a lot!

Just started my tweenie on the AcneFree line about 2 weeks ago and wow, what a difference! Having a hard time getting her to wash/tone/treat her face twice a day but even with just once a day makes such a difference. Poor kid, she got horrid skin genes from me and DH. In the past I have used Proactiv and it really aggravated my rosacea, but AcneFree worked pretty well for me. What works BEST for me (right now-seems like my face is always changing and I have to adapt) and what my dermatologist recommended was washing 2x a day with foaming Dial soap, spot treating with a salicylic acid (I use Clean and Clear advantage) and then a mild lotion with SPF.

DD13 has problems in her Tzone. Salicyclic(sp?) Acid dries her out really bad. Benzyl Peroxide is ineffective. So we researched and played until we found what works best. For her, keeping hair conditioner away from her face has been the biggest help and pulling her hair back at night. She normally washes and moisturizes morning and night with Cetyphil, but when her oil glands act up she does a light face scrub with baking soda. Dries out the excess oil without causing her skin to dry out and usually prevents breakouts before they happen. If she doesn't catch it soon enough (especially with sun screen) the scrub also helps those white pimples to disappear sooner. Blackheads are the one thing we have yet to completely manage; both of my girls and I have blackheads.

Watch foods high in iodine too. Soy sauce, shell fish, etc...

My DD14 also has very dry sensitive skin with only occasional small break outs. She wanted clear flawless skin and I wanted her to have it. We tried many over the counter programs and products but what really worked was a prescription for Benzaclin. My advice ask your doctor.

DD had a similar situation. Tried two different very expensive creams prescribed by the pediatrician, with limited results. The derm put her on some different meds, which really helped. I would absolutely recommend the derm.

We tried it all, including 2 Rxs. Her skin is pretty clear now except for blackheads on the nose. She grew out of it...hormones probably. She uses Mary Kay now and it works good. Dr suggested Dial (anti bacterial) and Neutrogenia if she had sensitive skin issues which she didn't.

Our two teens used Acutaine a few years ago. Completely gone and no reoccurance since. They had dry skin and lips while on it but it only took a few months.

My daughter has been using the Bare Minerals Teen skincare system for about 1-1/2 years now. It's the best thing we've found.

I'm not a teen, but I used to breakout really bad. I saw dermatologists and they gave me prescription creams and stuff to use, but the only thing that worked for me is proactive. I've been using it for years.

My 12 yo DS started getting pimples on his nose and cheeks.I bought him the Neutrogena oil free acne wash and it does help. I just wish he would shower more often and wash his face every night. Why do boys hate being clean??
My 7 yo DD had a big pimple on her nose.I started worrying she was going through puberty this early. We took her to a dermatologist who gave us 2 bottles of benzoyl peroxide foam. 2 uses of that and her pimple was gone and none have returned- thank goodness. If Ds's pimples get worse I'm going to try the bezoyl peroxide foam on him.

I have adult ache still. and my dermo gave me all sorts of scripts that I had to pay a $40 co-pay finally he told me to use a product with benzoyl peroxide which is found in Clean and Clear and it about $6.00. It works great just watch out because it does stain clothes and towels. I use a white towel.
