My poor brother! This is his first job and the first time he is getting the email that his company will be open despite the snow. He is freaking out. He is still back in school mode where you get a snow day:lmao:.

He works for a advertising company so they are not essential employees. He can not telecommute. They told them that they can take a vacation day or try to come in. They only way they will be closed is if a state of emergency is declared. Now that might very well happen bc we are in SEPA and we already have 25 inches on the ground, and 12- 18 more to come.

I am a SAHM so I do not have the headaches anymore but I remember the days of having to decide what to do. The CEO of the company I use to work for made it in once many years ago before the governor delcared a state of emergency. He was so mad that none of us came in, until someone told him it was illegal to be on the roads. It was during an ice storm.

So as his big sister, I told him that yes his employer can say/do whatever they want, and then told him if it is as bad as they say it is going to be take the vacation day and hope Gov Rendell declares a state of emergency.

He wants to go complain. I told him that would not be wise. He is mad bc his roommate who is a social worker for the state of NJ is providing hotels for thier employees. I said well then I guess you can go work for the state:lmao:, we are paying for him to do that (or the people of NJ are). I offered for him to stay here bc it is closer but he does not want to do that.

I work for the govt so I would get a snow day:rotfl:

I work healthcare.

I am required to be there tomorrow morning. If that means I go in tonight, that is what I do...I will sleep in my office. I spent Friday 7 am thru Sun 2:30 pm at work. Again...I was required to be there Sat and Sun morning, so I stayed Fri. and Sat. night.

My DH works in an office. If he wanted to stay home in the snow...he probably could, but it wouldn't go over well. His office is pretty good about delaying opening, and closing early for weather though.

I'm a teacher, so I'll probably have off. However, I teach in a detention center. The secure staff are required to come in. If for some reason they can't get there, someone from the sheriff's department will come and pick them up and then take them home when their shift is over.

I work for a college so we do close but very rarely.

By 9:00 this morning, I'd already had 3 emails and one phone call so I sent out a reminder email as to the procedure when we close.

My favorite was when I got a call from someone when I was actually AT the office and was told, "But no one can possibly get there!!" Umm...where the heck do you think I am?:rotfl:

I work in DC, not for the government, but like many organizations mine follows the government closing procedures. So we are on our second snow day.

I actually made this call once:rolleyes1

This was before kids when I lived with my mom. It was just her and I and my two small brothers. Her development was horrible about getting plowed. We got a huge snowstorm, and her development did not get plowed until late in the day.

I called my boss and she was shocked I could not make it in. She had no problem! Most of the people in my department worked on the other side of the city. Turns out the ony ones who did not make it in that day were a handful of us who lived on the one side of the highway.

My boss is kind of like your brothers boss - be here or take PTO but we are not declaring a snow day unless the governor closes us down which to the best of my knowledge has never happened.

However, my boss will go so far as to come get the employess that cannot get out of their driveways or complexes. We have a guy who drives a mini cooper, when it really snows he is stuck because of clearance issues. My boss has a 4wd and not much slows her down.

Last big snow storm, several of the employees bought chains and chained up to get to work. The mind set is snow happens even if the really big storms are rare, the day must go on.

Our subdivisions never get plowed. First the hwys, then the main bus routes and the access to the hospitals, fire stations etc. then the school bus routes, but never residential. We all get out and pack it down by driving over it.

In the fourteen years since graduating college DH has only once not gone in due to weather--it was during a state of emergency in Wyoming when driving was illegal. Otherwise, every company he has worked for has always considered it the employee's responsibility to have a vehicle they ca nget to work or some other back up plan. So, we made sure we had four wheel drives in Wyoming and New Hampshire, lived reasonably close to the plants and he left REALLY early a few times so he had time to deal with the conditions. He would not be anywhere near the level he is at if he had gone in and complained about being made to work when it snowed.

I remember my last job (14 years ago). I lived 20 miles from the office, and I was the closest (small office). We were expecting a bad storm, so I was required to spend the night before in a hotel by the office, because the next day was payday, and someone needed to be there to hand out paychecks (security guards). So, I open the office, and Fedex cancelled, so no checks! It took me HOURS to get home from work (highway, 2 seater car). I've never worked anywhere that shut down due to snow. We're right in the path of this storm (NJ - NYC Metro area), and I'm going to try to talk DH into cancelling appointments with clients tomorrow.

Tell your brother "welcome to the real world". I am an accountant and my DH works in billing. Neither of us have ever worked somewhere that gives off for snow (we have worked in large corps, small and midsize). It is either be there or use PTO/Vacation time. It really stinks, but that is just part of growing up!

I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but the sooner he accepts it the sooner he will be able to plan for it (either by saving up vacation time or by learning how to deal with commuting in the snow).

That is what I told him, doesnt mean he is happy about it:lmao:

I did remind him that his next apartement might want to be closer to his job too instead of all the cool bars, but hey he is young! Priorities were different when you were in your 20s:rotfl:

Working in healthcare, we never had the option of a snow day! Back when I worked in a hospital if I called the hospital and said I can't make it due to the snow they would dispatch someone to come get me, seriously. they would also provide a place to shower and sleep if necessary and meals too if we got stuck there.
yes tell him welcome to the real world.
fwiw, my SIL works for the state of massachusetts, and she sometimes has to use her own time off to stay home if there is a lot of snow and they don't shut down her office

yep. snow happens. life goes on. DH's company always reminds everyone before the first big snow of the year what the snow policy is. take a PTO day or show up. They do close when it gets really bad, usually 1 day every 3 or 4 years. He is lucky and has a flexible schedule, so going in late or leaving work a little early helps avoid the worst of the snow and/or traffic.

Same here.

I was out running some errands so I stopped by at work to see what the big fuss was all about. The parking lots are clean and dry. But the roads getting there are terrible. So I guess the roads are the real problem.

1st grade public school teacher :teacher:

I always get off work due to snow.

Due to the 34 in. we got over the weekend & the expected 10-20 more we'll have by tomorrow....I'm not going back to work until next Tuesday at the earliest.

DH will have to go in at this point. It's a 50 mile commute- by bus. If it's as bad as they are saying he'll not be able to make it(the buses don't run)
I think it would be an unpaid day for him based on how they've been treating everyone there lately.

Right now I'm working a temp job at a gov't agency (after 8 months of u/e). I'm upset b/c I don't get paid holidays etc. and the agency is closed Friday AND Monday for the President's birthdays. No President's Day here, they get Washington's AND Lincoln's! So, to make a rant short, not only am I not getting paid for two days, it might be three because of the snow storm. I AM NOT a happy camper.
