Ok my doctor simply does this

1) Blood Pressure
2) Asks me to breath in while listening with his stethoscope
3) Send me to go get a blood test

THE END

Is it me or does this not look like a physical? With out invading anyones privacy what does your doctor do? Also what websites can I visit to pick a new doctor(I heard there are websites that have reviews on doctors in your area)? Also are these websites free?

I've never actually "officially" had a physical. I am 42 and no one has suggested I "just come in" for a physical. But I've had the work done as a result of complaints.

For a physical, you should have what you listed above, your reflexes should be checked. Your doctor should look at your fingernails, inside your mouth. Palpate your internal organs, feel all your glands.

You should have a standard blood chemistry done (kidney function, metabolic function, thyroid, cholesterol, blood sugar, etc).

You should also have an EKG.

For what he does to me he should at least buy me dinner first  :lmao:

HAVE to agree with this!! So far I've only seen women, but I'm still pretty sure I should be getting dinner first!

The least he could do is tell me that he loves me.

I guess I'll find out Tuesday morning when I get the results of my bloodwork and EKG. :confused3

All this to get another year's worth of prescriptions.

That's not a physical. Did he/she tell you it was a physical? A physical takes at least an hour and a half and his profoundly unpleasant. But I think after 40 you should have one each year.

Thanks................Does anyone know the website the you can go and select a doctor based on others reviews

Can you tell me what was unpleasant? Or does this just apply to males? I can't think of anything I've ever had done that was unpleasant during a routine check up? Now, the flexible sigmoidoscopy was another story.... :teeth:

When a patient comes in for a physical, I first ask what is the purpose of the physical. A physical for a student participating in sports is very different from that of a woman of childbearing age, which in turn is different for a 60yo man with a history of heart disease. So, I take a good history, trying to find out what the particular concerns of the patient might be, including what prompted them to come for a physical at this particular time. Then, I perform a focused physical exam--usually at minimum a head and neck, screening neurological exam, cardiovascular and pulmonary system exam, and, finally, musculoskeletal. Then, I order blood work as needed based on the history and physical findings. Some people need no blood work, some people get a super extensive laboratory evaluation. Whatever blood work we do needs to be supported by whatever diagnosis the patient has.

Slightly off topic...

A friend of mine took her son in for a school physical when he started in a public high school last year. The doctor asked him, "What do you wear in a car?" He was slightly mystified but replied, "Clothes..." The correct answer was seat belt, but for the life of me I can't imagine if that has anything to do with his physical.

Very important question. They also make sure babies and toddlers are in car seats or booster seats, and young bike riders are wearing helmets. All precautionary questions that could save a life! Standard questions at the office I work at.
