What does this statement mean?

Not trying to start a controversy, but maybe I'm missing something. I was recently looking to rent points for someone's existing reservation during Oct. We were on the waitlist, but it was getting down to 30 days. Luckily, I found a member with a reservation that was willing to accept a point transfer. One person that I had contacted wanted quite a bit for their points, and they have several reservations listed during this period they were renting. I don't have a problem with that, but this statement shows up in their posts as an explanation for their asking price: "but availability is extremely limited during this period and I was forced to book some of the nights at higher rates." What are they talking about here?

Interesting.

One does not pay more for each point based on when they rent.
Maybe they mean that they had to use points that they had paid more for, and considered to be of higher value.
One example would be using points from VWL to book accomodations at SSR or OKW.

But it sounds like someone has hoarded reservations, for a time they expect there to be high demand, for the sole sake of maximizing profit.

I am not against people renting points. I realize that the point rental market helps keep the risks of owning DVC lower.
I like knowing that I can probably rent my points out, if something happens and I can't use them.

However,
I think it would be hard for me to rent from someone who had hoarded accomodation reservations, at a time when I couldn't get what I wanted. If it had directly effected me, and my ability to use my own points, I would probably feel more negative about the practice then I now do.
I just would not want to contribute to someone profiting from this sort of business venture.

Maybe a BWV owner that normally books standard view but had to book preferred view? That would make some point difference.

Glad you found someone to trade with. The other owner will only get what the free market will allow them to.

As stated above the owner probably couldn't reserve the cheaper standard view villas because of high demand at that time but was able to secure preferred view at a much higher point lever per night. Since the rental is probably much cheaper than going thru CRO, the renter is still getting a bargain and the DVC member is getting what the market will bear for price per point. Frankly its up to each member to plan to use their points as best suits their situation and if I were to call and have and all rooms for the time period I wanted to go were booked, then I would have to either go on the wait list or try to rent the secured accomodations from the member who had obtained them. Its perfectly fair despite what alot on this board say. I frankly don't lose sleep over the negative comments about renting as I'm sure from time to time I will want to do that and get what the market will bear.

As I said, I have no problem with someone renting their points out, I've done it myself. And I'm grateful there were reservations to be had through the rent/trade board.

This wasn't a case of BWV standard vs. preferred, it was on a thread for a WVL rental. Yes, the reservation might be harder to get, but the points still cost the member the same, don't they? I can't think of a way the member would have had to have "paid" more to get the reservation. That's why I'm asking, am I missing something here? Surely someone wouldn't make this claim falsely, when a whole lot of people that know better read those boards.

Deleted, because I think my statements WOULD cause controversy!

Let me think..........YEA! There are a lot of people that only read the rent board, and don't know all the workings of DVC. By them saying they had to pay more, it justifies their rental rate.

Ask them. I'd like to know what their answer was.

Could this be a scenario where a member rents points at a bargain and is attempting to re-rent them at a premium? Can you re-rent points?

Rented points never "leave" the account of a member, they are just used to place a ressie in the name of another.

The only way you could "re-rent" would be to get the owner of the points to put the name of the "new" renter on the confirmation.

There are people who rent who acquire many of their points from other members.

How does this work? Through an out-and-out transfer of points as opposed to renting the points?

That's the only way I can think of for it to work.

Member 1 pays member 2 to transfer points to member 1's account. Member 1 makes the reservation and rents it to a third party.

Best wishes -

So is this a middle man markup?

That's what I was thinking? I have no idea but it would explain the comment that he was forced to pay a higher rate for some of the dates.

When you transfer points can you also transfer the existing reservation?

I think the statement is BOGUS.

I don't like the idea of renting DVC reservations as a business. But I do like the idea of people getting top dollar for renting points when they do.

Chingching.
