What does the A & M stand for?

After an university's name. You know like Texas A & M.

Yep. It's Agricultural and Mechanical.

That's why most A&M schools are nicknamed "Aggies".

To be fair the nicknames are Aggies and Maggies. Also the A & M in Texas A & M no longer has any meaning. The Texas Legislaturers passed a bill some years ago, changing the name of several state schools and in the bill they actually changed the name to Texas A & M without defining the A & M meaning that in Texas at least it no longer means Agricultural and Mechanical. They felt that since the university had such a wide curriculem and offered degrees in so many fields that the name was no longer appropriate.

My son is a junior at A&M so thats why I know any of this.

Also as a really weird trivial fact: As of a couple of years ago a special program at A&M that focuses on computer generated effects as in those used in movies and animation had the largest number of graduates working in that industry. They worked for Pixar, Disney, Dream Works etc. It's a highly competative program that only accepts something like 100 students a year.

In Nc, we have North Carolina A&T - Agricultural and Technical. They're called the "Aggies" too!

In NM there is an A & M as well but it stands for Agriculture and Mining.

Some universities originally founded as A & M have later changed their names to show that they offer a broader program. NC State University, for example, was founded as North Carolina A & M.

I thought it was Military also, but I did a search for Texas A&M, and the answer was Mechanical. Maybe a different University uses Military for the M.
