What does referrals mean?

Back in high school, referals were bad...not that I know anything about that.

There was a substitute teacher at my Junior High who used to say, "I have referrals and I'm not afraid to use them." She was a real witchy woman... not a very popular person around campus. What a stupid threat!
So what if you know someone in RL and they joined the DIS because of you but they don't put you as a referral?
