If you can smell it from your apartment and you know it's not cigarettes, then it is probably pot. Don't worry though, you will not get a contact high and it will not make you have a positive drug screen result.

skunk is imo the best description.

One of the trends here is the hooka. It is my understanding that it is used to smoke tobacco, herbal fruits and cannibis. Perhaps they are smoking something just not what you suspect.

Have you been to a rock concert? Smell anything there kinda "odd"? That would be it. Seriously, my roommate didn't think she had ever smelled it before till we were somewhere where there was pot being smoked, she then realized she indeed had smelled it.

To me it smells like dirt, hay or even Christmas trees. Funny story: One year DH and I bought some "Herbal Fir" Christmas tree smell incense.

We lit it and it smelled exactly like POT! We still laugh about that.

put dried oregano on the burner of your stove. it is a heinous odor and smells a little like smoldering oregano.

To me it smells like skunk, or cat pee or even that sharp, acrid smell of a brand new bag of Starbucks ground coffee. I think it must smell different to everybody...but that's what it smells like to me

Nope. Never been to a concernt period. I think I figured it out. I just took out the trash and when I was in the stairwell I noticed my psycho neighbor had sprayed some kind of god awful sweet air freshener in the stairwell. I think what I'm smelling is a combo of the cigarette smoke and that wretched air freshener.

Oh, the air freshener wasn't them. I have a neighbor who is known as a complete witch (most likely the one who called the sheriff if that is what it was) and she has been spraying any number of air fresheners and leaving the door open (in 0 degree weather) because of the cigarette smell. Like I said, they leave their door to the stairwell open to air out their apartment, but then it makes the stairwell and the rest of our apartments smell like smoke. The other day it was so strong my clothes smelled like stale cigarettes- and I don't smoke!

all cigarettes pretty much smell the same. Cigars can vary quite a bit but they always smell like stinky cigars.

But if it smells funny, like the sweet smell you described, BINGO!

How stupid to air out the apartment into public! Thats why they call it dope. Doh!

I'm loving it so far! My kids are a little crazy and a lot exhausting, but they're a good crew. My only problem has been a mom threatened to pull her daughter out of our class (we give her resource math instruction) so I can no longer teach that set of students.

Sounds good so far. Good luck finding a job. It is now 700-800 applicants per one opening now. I think we have the same certs-- so just be prepared for a challenging time finding a position.

That is a small problem compared to other issues. Have a good rest of the semester.

Yeah, IMO it smells sickly sweet. Although when I lived in an apartment as a young adult, I used to say (in my "out loud" voice) "Whew! It reeks of stupid in here!!"

Haven't read all the replies, but it smells like sage to me. If you burn a stick of dried sage, it's a very similar smell.
