I opened an alert that I got earlier and all it was was a yellow star-like thing. What is it?

Not sure, but definitely nothing to worry about. I had several like that shortly after the conversion to the new boards, the first few times I logged-in; I don't think I've had one for the past week or so. My guess is it's auto-generated by something behind-the-scenes related to converting your account to the new boards.
