I asked my guide if I could add someone to my contract if it was a new contract (add on AKV). He said I could add him on as an associate. What does that mean?

Thanks Tigger

From the member website:
An "Associate" is a person named by the Purchaser or Purchasers who is only authorized to make reservations using the Club Member's Home Resort Vacation Points. Associates do not receive Member Cards and are not entitled to the benefits and privileges that are available to a Club Member. In addition, Associates may not access financial information related to the Annual Dues and/or loan pertaining to the Club Member's Ownership Interest.

To expand on what your guide said:

Add-ons must be titled exactly the same as your original contract.

If you purchase through resale, you can purchase a smaller contract, and title it anyway you wish, however, it would be an entirely different membership number. This mean that the points can not be combined for any one night of a reservation, so you have to make two separate reservations to use points from both contracts for a single visit, then have the reservation linked. Or you could transfer points (using you one transfer per use year) for BOTH contracts for this.

You could also purchase an entirely new 160 point membership and have it titled differently, but again, using points from those two contracts for a single stay would mean the above restrictions apply.

Basically an Associate is someone you name to manage the use of your points, they do not receive a membership card, and are not eligible for membership perks and benefits.

Hey Chuck! We just recently bought and my husband is an Associate on the membership and our packet included a temporary membership card for him- I haven't received my permanent card yet- But I am assuming when I do they will send him one too- It has Associate on his temp card and he has a memb # as well-He also has a pin etc for the DVC memb website- He didn't sign any of the paperwork nor will he (to my understanding) be listed on the deed. Should this be something I inquire about later? Or do you think they have changed policies? & when you say membership benefits & discounts... what would that involve? Thx for any info

This may be something new so that the associate has the memberhsip number handy to call Member Services and make reservations. Even according to the website Associates are not supposed to have a membership card.

Membership benefits and perks means that if your associate does not live with you, they could not get the discounted Annual Pass. (Your husband can get the Discounted AP, as long as he shows ID with the same address as yours.) And technically, the dining/shopping discounts and free valet parking at DVC resorts would also not be available to him, though this seems to vary depending upon the CM. Some CMs just look at the room key card that says DVC Member, but they are supposed to look at the actual DVC Membership card.

Thx Chuck! I will just keep look out and make sure this isn't another small mistake that has happened during our purchase- (we have had a few) But then again maybe it is because he is my husband and we are in the same household- We haven't asked to add anyone who is extended family or anything like that, he just happened to not be available when I called our Guide back so I asked what would the difference be w/ just me or both of us and our Guide told me none really, he could still make reservations and such but he wouldn't be on the deed- We didn't think it was a big deal at the time... What differences will we see as far as taxes and such goes? Do you know?

The dues/property taxes will, of course, be your responsibility, not your husband's, as you are the legal owner of the contract. This may vary by your state of residence, though. It could also make a difference in case something happens to you, as far as how your husband would inherit the membership, but again, that may vary by your state of residence.

Remember that DVC is legally considered a real estate interest, even though it is limited with an expiration date, so legally everything that applies to deeding a home also applies to DVC.
