There's been a catchy song I hear on the radio. Hollaback girl? What does it mean?

Also, I always thought the singer was saying Harlem Black girl all this time until I saw this song on MTV.

Hollaback specifically means when someone is leaving, they will speak with, or "hollaback" later (Holla meaning "talk to you"). A Hollaback girl is someone who sleeps with a guy, then the guy leaves and bascially says I'll talk to you later - no specific time or date, just later. Meaning, they don't have a specific type of relationship, just booty calls (meaning they get together only for the purpose of having "relations" - thus a call for "the booty"). Did I break it down enough ?

I went online when my DD11 asked me what it was. Thankfully I didn't come up with what you guys have!! It said that in cheerleading there is the cheerleading captain and the rest are the hollaback girls (the captain says the cheer and then the hollaback girls repeat it). So, according to this website at least, Gwen Stefani is stating through this song that she's the captain - #1. The video also depicts her as a cheerleader. Not sure which is right!!

I went and looked it up when a teacher of the kindergarten classroom at our child care center was teaching it to the children.

The definitions I found ranged from -

the "holler back" girl on a cheerleading team.

A girl of loose morals that had sex quickly and waited for the guy to holla back for her and she would come every time

and a girl who in a fight would never fight but just holler back insults.

I didn't let her continue to teach the children the song.

(well - I wouldn't have regardless - it has the "S" word in it)

Just wanted to thank you guys for getting the real meaning of "hollaback girl" out there.

One of the teachers at my studio asked if she could use this song this year as a class dance. If I hadn't seen this thread & read some of the meanings I may have considered letting her use it!!!

I just e-mailed her & "quoted" some of the responses on this thread & told her I didn't think it was appropriate for a dance recital.
