What does fondant taste like?

I've never had a wedding cake where they've left the fondant on the cake when served. I didn't know that anyone left it on for you to remove or eat.

Depends on the brand of fondant, as others have stated. The brand that I use when decorating is called Choco-pan. It tastes like tootsie rolls!! It's really yummy...difficult to sit there and concentrate on decorating with it when it smells like tootsie rolls...lol

My buttercream recipe is half shortening-half real butter (NOT margarine) and it's YUMMY!!! I do like Italian buttercream and French buttercream recipes. Very light and airy. It's just not as easy to decorate with as my traditional buttercream recipe is!

Great...now you've made me start thinking about French or Italian buttercream. Now I'm going to be forced to make a cake, ice it with either one, and eat it!! I'm never going to fit into my cruise clothes...lol...

Just give me a bucket of buttercream frosting and a spoon and shut the door on your way out. :thumbsup2

Thanks for asking this question, I've always wondered too.

Now who knows how much $$$ it would cost to get one of those fancy cakes at Ace of Cake?

They START at $500, tiers START at $8 per serving.

Oh yeah, and there's a delivery fee of $125 an HOUR.

I think some of his cakes are neat, but they're not THAT neat.;)

Take a look...

I've had the fondant kept on the cake when I have gotten it. And where in the heck would the put all the used fondant? EWWWW! Just the thought of a used up, icky pile of fondant sitting on some counter grosses me out. And I would think that a bride would be ticked that she paid for this fondant on her cake and the cutters stripped it off. Not that I would be happy about fondant on my cake, but its better than nothing.
Around here the bakers will take it off. You aren't supposed to eat it... at least what my bakers have told me. That was the main reason why I didn't want fondant on my cake. It looks nice but is such a waste in the end. My baker for our wedding explained we could have it, but they put butter cream on also beneath so that there is real icing to eat for the guests... so what's the point?

I am truly shocked that you have been served cake with it... I thought that was a huge no-no

There is nothing in fondant that makes it inedible. Most bakeries don't want to use the expensive fondants that taste good and that's the reason they tell you it's not edible...because those really aren't! They won't kill you, but they taste awful. The reason they put buttercream underneath the fondant is that the fondant has to have something to adhere to. You can't just place it on bare cake, it would fall off.

Satin Ice advertises that their fondant has a pleasant taste. They even make it in chocolate. I actually have a 20lb tub of it due to be delivered today!!:) It's expensive, but it's worth it.

I have had to introduce fondant to people I sell cakes to by way of using it for decorations. It's amazing that people will scream " I hate fondant!!", but when you use it for decorations on cake (like playing cards for a poker cake), they'll come back saying how neat it was that the decorations were soft and actually tasted good.

Then I have them hooked on fondant and I get to sell some high $$$ cakes.;)

The whole point of fondant though is that you can do some beautiful cakes that just wouldn't be possible with frosting alone.
