I think it's silly to get worked up about it. I don't care if they want to see my receipt. If they think it's so important that they are willing to pay people to do the job, then I assume they have a good reason for it. I don't mind letting them check out my receipt as I'm leaving. If I did mind, I wouldn't shop at stores that checked receipts. I absolutely wouldn't patronize a business if I disagreed with their policies, especially if I believed those policies to be illegal! Perhaps stores need to post their policies outside the door and print them on the receipts so people will be aware of them before they choose whether or not to shop there.
Since the store is private property, wouldn't they have the right to ban you from the premises in the future if you choose not to comply with their policies?
exactly my point. Thank you. They have every right to ask me for my receipt and I have every right to say "No, thank you " and keep walking
