What does everyone think about receipt checkers?

I think it's silly to get worked up about it. I don't care if they want to see my receipt. If they think it's so important that they are willing to pay people to do the job, then I assume they have a good reason for it. I don't mind letting them check out my receipt as I'm leaving. If I did mind, I wouldn't shop at stores that checked receipts. I absolutely wouldn't patronize a business if I disagreed with their policies, especially if I believed those policies to be illegal! Perhaps stores need to post their policies outside the door and print them on the receipts so people will be aware of them before they choose whether or not to shop there.

Since the store is private property, wouldn't they have the right to ban you from the premises in the future if you choose not to comply with their policies?

Maybe, but realistically are they going to compile the Walmart Watch List? And what are they going to do, retinal scans on everyone who walks in the door to make sure they aren't on the list?

I'm more annoyed that I have to show my membership card to get in to sam's, especially since you can't buy anything without a membership, and they check your receipt at the door.

Realistically it probably wouldn't do much good to ban people. But if someone is a frequent shopper at their local Walmart and always refuses to comply with the store's policies the employees are likely to start to recognize him. In that case, they could tell the person to leave if they spot him entering or shopping in the store. (I don't know why someone would continue to support a store that has policies they disagree with, though - that seems ridiculous to me.)

Of course I would hope if someone was banned from the store that he wouldn't go there again, since that would be trespassing. I might be giving the average consumer too much credit for wanting to do the right thing, though.

Have they ever looked in your bags and rummaged through your stuff? My Walmart has had reciept checkers for as long as I can remember (until they hired police officers). Never once had I seen them rummaging through a bag. I just hand them the reciept, the glance at the cart and thats that. If I have a one bag, I would willingly open it and let them look inside, and as long as a customer willingly lets them, then they do have the right. You also have the right to refuse, and I'm guessing you wouldn't be hauled off and detained in a back room and forced to let them search you before you could leave the store

Its really no big deal people, hand them the reciept and be on your way, no reason to get yourself in a tizzy

Yes, I HAVE had them rummage thru my bags. Its really lovely when I've got about $150 worth of groceries at Walmart and they say "we have to verify that the cashier rang up all your items". Sure, if I have a bag with a couple DVDs or video games in it, but you want to count my cans of tunafish and my bananas?

It's all nothing but a big show.

You have that right then they should have the right to follow you to your car and get your license plate number and call the cops. they have no idea if you paid or not.

It isn't something that registers as important enough for me to care one way or the other.

The only time I have ever had the receipt checker at Walmart or Best Buy check me is if I had items not in a bag. If all of my items are in store bags they have always just let me go past.

Many times the checkers will be more diligent in stores with high shrinkage.

I was pulled over once after doing some shopping and I had a bunch of bags in my back seat. The officer asked if I would show him what is in the bags. Could I have said no and insisted on a warrant? Sure. Did I, no. I showed him what was in the bags and was courteous. Not only did he not find anything illegal but because I was respectful and non-confrontational I didn't even get the ticket he pulled me over for. I didn't feel as though my civil rights were violated.

I once went into Sams to buy the membership. They stopped me going in to show the card . I explained I was there to buy the membership ..... The person at the door tried to not let me in! Said I needed a membership card to get in....I said but that's what I am here to buy..... Took a few til he finly got it!

At the mall here, there are stores that have signs posted that they reserve the right to search bags before you enter, and that all large bags must be left at the register before shopping. They aren't the stores I frequent (hiphop/thug type clothes) but I would have no problem letting a store search my bag when I come in.

I did a bunch of reading on the internet before I posted and there really is no legal requirement for you to show your receipt and you cannot be detained. People have filed lawsuits and won over things like this.

You might note that there also is no legal requirement for them to allow you to shop in their store.

For all those who would refuse to allow the store to check your bags after checkout, I'm wondering what you think about WDW checking your bags before you enter. Of course you have the right to refuse and they have the right to not admit you. But how do you feel personally about them cheking your bags? Does it bother you as much as the bag checks at, say Walmart? Like I said, it doesn't bother me, but I'm curious if people feel differently based on the company or the situation.

The difference, to me, is that WDW is checking for something that might cause harm to anyone in their parks.In other words, they want to protect me.

Wally World and Sams are only interested in protecting their pocketbook. Instead of handling things the way they do, they should have more staff to check for shoplifters. That won't happen though because they won't even hire cashiers. Instead of humans we have to deal with computers that on a human scale have a reasoning IQ of about 2.

Receipt checking is not always about the shopper shoplifting. It's also about checking the employees. When I worked for a national retailer a few years back, some fellow employees were caught not ringing up items and putting them in bags for their friends/accomplices to take away.

My only problem with it is that the line builds up and its always next to the TIRES! I am deathly allergic to rubber (I carry an epi pen its that bad) and the smell of the rubber sometimes is so strong that I have to leave my stuff with my husband and get out of there quickly. Nothing like causing a scene

I DO NOt like it at all, for many of the same reasons others have listed. I do not believe it is cost-effective. I'm not of the mind-set of, "This person needs a job. Let's create one out of the goodness of our hearts". This is not a good business decision.

My husband actually quit shopping at the Walmart by our house because of the receipt checker (one individual) always treating him like a criminal. He said the last time he went, he refused to have her detain him and search through his bags, and has never gone back. I can't say that I blame him, either.

It doesn't matter whether we are guilty or not, it is the principle of the matter. We should not be treated as criminals for NO reason, as Americans.

It doesn't bother me at all. It always takes less than 20 seconds. If it deters shoplifters and helps keep prices down, then I have no problem with it.

It annoys me. Last year we were camping in rural Mississippi. Being from New Orleans, reciept checking is a regular part of shopping sadly and has been for the 12 years I have lived here. My children are trained to hold the reciept and show it and I don't put the reciept away until I get to the car. When we went to the Walmart is Mississippi, my then 4 year old son gave the greeter the reciept when were leaving. She refused to take it and he refused to move until she looked at it. I explained that we were from New Orleans and he has never been to a Walmart that hasn't checked his reciept. So she took it to end the "stand off" and explained to him that they don't do it at that Walmart because they don't have that many black people that shop there. Yes, you read that right. I said you mean shoplifters right. And of course she realized what she said and started to talk really fast, but I just shook my head and left. My son is biracial and we have had a hard time with him and race since then. Who would have thought a simple run to Walmart could create such a headache....
