What do you wish you would have known?

I wish I had known how valuable the small contracts would become. If I had known this I would never have bought any large contracts back in the '90's.

I also wish I had saved all of my deeds. I know I can get them, but it would be nice to have them now.

For new (first-timer) contracts, Disney now requires purchasing a minimum of 160 points. Will Disney allow that new purchase be written as smaller contracts as long as you are buying the 160 minimum? For example, if I wanted to have it written as two 80 point contracts so that someday I could pass one each to my two children. Or is the only way to do this for the first time buyer is by purchasing smaller contracts through the resale market?

I would like to know this answer as well. Could we even split it up into 3 contracts if we wanted to? Would that then mean that we get the maintenance fees times 3? KWIM?:confused3

For an initial purchase, no they will not. You will need 160 in a single contract but could add smaller ones above that. If you buy a small contract resale, the 160 pt min does not apply.

I wish we had thought more carefully about our home resort. We bought VWL, but we had our choice of BCV, BWV or VWL. We chose VWL because we were staying there for that visit and really thought it was a neat resort. But we've only stayed at VWL once. We much prefer BWV and it's easy access to Epcot and MGM. I wish we had made BWV our home resort.

Why is that? Do you find that you cannot book the BCV or the BWV 7 months out?

Hello,

I don't know if you knew this, but I just joined...and in my first conversation with MS, I found out that you have limits on when and how many points you can bank. This was totally new to me.

I guess you have to bank in the first 6 months of your use year if you want to bank over 50% of your points...after that, there are more rules for 25% etc. I haven't figured all of that out yet. Not that this is a big issue, it just means I need to have my plans mapped out early in my use year.

Good luck on your decision. We finally pulled the trigger and I am so excited! Like a kid in the candy store!

Confirmed that Disney will not allow this. We are in the process of purchasing 90 poimts at three different resorts. I contacted Disney repeatedly trying to convince someone that they should sell me the 270 points in the manner requested. The consistent answer, from sources low and high, was "no." To get your initial purchase straight from Disney you need to have a single contract of 160 points. Don't waste your time trying to convince them otherwise. They aren't moving on this one.

We ended up buying a 50 point contract via resale. And, the day we our contract hit the system, we did add-ons via Disney. The resale process took a little longer, but it was worth it to get the ownership level and structure that we wanted.

Good luck.

Have bought an extra 100 points today at AKV -so lucky as I got 25 per cent off as my son arrived yesterday on the College program:)

Not mentioned yet is the importance of the year end-advice we had was to go for a December year end which means that your points are allocated for use that month-so very flexible and useful if you want to travel at Xmas, Easter or Summer holiday.

Downside more expense at Xmas to pay dues!!

We bought first with 300 at BCV and advice was to put into 2 150 holdings.

I wish I would have known how hard it would be to trade outside of the DVC resorts

Thanks for the great info on this thread. DH and I toured last week and fell in love. I always knew I wanted to buy but we haven't yet (I just graduated and won't start work for another 6 weeks and we want to pay off our CCs first). But I am trying to arm myself with as much info as I possibly can. Keep it coming! :)

Could you please elaborate on this comment. Are you talking about staying at non Disney resorts through Interval, or is this another issue? Thanks.

That's what I meant Interval International. I've been trying for years to trade and nothing ever comes through.

I wish that we had paid more attention to the "best kept secrets" sales kiosks at WDW when we started taking our children to the World 6 years ago. We spent over $28,000 on trips in those years and that would have been alot of points! Fortunately we wised up and are now very happy DVC owners!

Great info. here!!! :thumbsup2 Subscribing!!!

Every time I talk to someone that goes to WDW every year and isn't a DVC member I tell them about it. They're usually left just shaking their heads

Subscribing, but also just wanted to comment on this as we have been tossing DVC back and forth for months now, LOL.

First, this is a GREAT thread with a ton of good info. The problem is, in some ways it's making it worse for us. Example - the above quotes. I keep telling myself those things. (What we have spent and will spend to travel to Disney each year for hopefully a LONG time). Problem is, then I turn around 2 minutes later and say, "wait a minute, the costs I'm adding up include park tickets, air fare, dining plan etc., so it's NOT an even comparison". :confused3 I need to keep reminding myself that buying DVC is ONLY buying my hotel room. Then, I turn around and think it's really NOT such a good deal. But guess what? The next day, I'm thinking of buying again, looking into it further, and finding great threads like this, LOL. :goodvibes

I think I'm going to have a headache!

Steve-we are in the exact same boat you are right now. We sat down again last night and went over figures. Talked to Gib McCain again this week and got the skinny on point cost and what we need and with the figures and association fees what we could save over the next 41 years on hotel rooms alone would be 63,000 roughly because they go up every year and that is a dtandard concierge room at the Boardwalk Inn in value season. Then we say ok we'll do it. Then we decide we would miss concierge too much and the convenience of having everyhting packaged together and everything done. Then I decide I can't be that spoiled because financially it makes too much sense. Then the comments about the maintenance not being up to par scares me because I do want happy bright fun times when I go to the Boardwalk!! I have had a headache all week. DVC owners HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:rotfl:
