Should America lower the voting age? Should we as 13-17 year olds be able to vote for the upcoming election? Why or Why not? If you could vote for the upcoming election who would you vote for? Why?

I will give my answer later in the thread. :) This was a discussion in history, boy do we have the greatest debates in that class.

nope. most people our age are too immature to vote. or don't care.

those who care will thank themselves later. i think it's fine.

I agree with you, I will explain later BUT... think about this. How many adults in our American Population that are able to vote really know what they are voting for? It has been proven that there are a large portion of people in America that Do Not care about the political reasons, and just vote for their party OR they have no idea of the political reasons and just pick somebody for the fact of picking somebody.

I think the voting age should be 16.

BUT
I think you should have to take a test to be allowed to vote. I think you should have to know who's running, what they stand for, current events pertaining to the election. The test would be written (audible or braille for the blind) so the voter would have to be literate. The test wouldn't cost anything, so it wouldn't descriminate because of wealth.

The test should be administered before the person is allowed to vote. It wouldn't be complicated, but you would have to know what you're voting for to vote.

We went through this factor in class as well. But think about it, how much time would that take for the government? Why wouldn't those eligable to vote now have to take it? The fact is politicans don't care if you know what your voting for, if they can get your vote.:headache:

Personally, i destest the whole political system, but under the situation I described, EVERY voter would take the same test.

I totally agree with you, with the political system that we have now, it seems as if the entire voting process is ridiculous. I think voting at the age of 16 would be wonderful IF there was a test for everyone on the issues, but as I said, I really think the government could care less if half the population has no idea of what the issues are.

I may have embellished a little :)

I have similar thoughts. My thinking is that to make a decision, you should be as informed as possible. Voting has huge impacts, so I think that anyone who can prove that they are informed, regardless of age, should be allowed to vote. Still, testing everyone might be a bit difficult logistically, not to mention costly.

any more costly than getting the wrong man put into office, making bad decisions, because of the good old boy popularity contest mentality that has taken over the political system?

While it's true that picking the right candidate is extremely important, I bring up cost in the sense that I doubt a test would be feasible due to opposition based on the cost. However, I don't believe that a test will guarantee any particular person's election. Regardless of how informed you are, picking a candidate will be based on your opinion and beliefs. The person that you vote for will be different than the person other people might vote for. I don't think you can really call it 'right' or 'wrong.'

agreed. Like our government would put the money into a testing system? Sigh.. Well we are the future who knows, years from now... possibly.

Voting age should be 16.
But honestly, I would not want 13 year olds determining who ran my, or the countries around me. It is not that I think 13 year olds aren't smart, they are, but there are a few who don't even understand the word 'politic'

Nope. Not ready. It's a privaledge when you turn of age (18).

When I went to the House of Reps. Chamber, there was a lady who had two kids. One about 6 and the other about 10. The lady knew nothing about it. I knew all about politics. She thought

(a.) the house and the senate were the same
(b.) the house and congress made up the senate

IT WAS EMBARASSING! I think she just voted on her party. i think she asked her husband. He knew a little more than her but not much. It showed how much some people pay attention.

So i think there should be some kind of test. I probably could pass it... just like Shelby said

Should America lower the voting age? Nope. Should we as 13-17 year olds be able to vote for the upcoming election? Nope. Why or Why not? Because usually 13-17 year olds don't care and are too immature to have the pivaledge. If you could vote for the upcoming election who would you vote for? Anybody but Obama. If Hillary Clinton would run I would vote for her. Why? Because I am sorry I personally do not like Obama.

As a 21 year old i think they should RAISE the voting age. I think most 18 year olds are too young to understand what is going on and I didn't realize what was going on until I went to college and was exposed to different opinions and views.
