What do you think of this costume...for an 11 year old?

Am I getting old? My nephew is at our house for the weekend. He is in 5th grade (11.) My son is in 6th grade (11.) My nephew just pulled out his Halloween costume...brand new...purple velvet pants/jacket and hat...with leopard trim. Now it is a cool outfit...but my nephew says he's a pimp! I checked the costume...sure enough...it's a pimp costume!

Am I the only one that thinks this is inappropriate? I haven't asked him yet if he knows what a pimp is....I know my son doesn't know what a pimp is. Funny thing is he also wore it at school for the school party.

Am I missing a different meaning of a pimp?

Meh not really, most kids that age semm to just kind of associate it with the olden days AKA the 70's! LOL!

When I think of a Pimp Costume I think of Huggy Bear from the origianl Starsky and Hutch show. In other words, I don't think of a guy selling women for money, I just think of a funky dressed man with a large hat and bell bottoms.
My 15yo daughter wanted to dress as Sally Jupiter, the 1940's crime fighter from Watchmen. My DH wasnt' thrilled but finally said OK. She's decided she going as Tinkerbell instead, which is an even more revealing outfit but without the garters!! It was just the garters that set my poor DH off. Everyone's got their own line, I guess.

Umm....inappropriate. (and when I was a teenager, I knew exactly what a pimp was and though it in poor taste then as well.)

Agreed

OK...thanks for your opinions...I knew my nephew didn't know what a pimp was...so I"m sure he just likes the costume for the silly purple pants with leopard bell bottoms and the purple jacket and hat. It does look funny...Thanks for telling me your thoughts! I can enjoy the night! I guess I read too much into it!

ITA. And the word pimp has become an acceptable slang term for funkifying things up.

I think it's incredibly tacky for parents to let their pre-teen child dress as a pimp, whether or not the child knows exactly what a pimp is. Other people do know what a pimp is, and eventually the child will also. It's completely innappropriate, in my opinion, and I question the judgement of any parent who would allow it. (And while I know that the word "pimp" is also used as a verb now in another context, a person who is called a pimp is a very different thing.) Oddly, on another forum I visit someone encountered a child dressed as a pimp today, though he was accompanied by two "hoes". (seriously, that's what the kids said!) I wonder if it was the same kid?

ETA - If a kid wants to wear a funky costume I don't think that's a big deal. It's referring to it as a pimp costume that I find so objectionable.

I agree with both of you..

I think maybe a Zombie would have been a better costume....I would have had my son pick something else. I wonder what the teachers were thinking when they asked what he was and his reply was...I'm a Pimp :lmao::eek: What does one say in reply to that :rotfl: Oh thats nice.....next :upsidedow

"Really? How much do you pull in per week?" :lmao:

I saw a first grader in a pimp outfit today, leopard hat, pantsuit, $ necklace & diamond topped cane. I kid you not!
I turned to the guy next to me at the elementary school sing along & I said I'm afraid to see his little sister. He had two words...

Oh if one of my boys wanted to wear that costume I'd let them but I'd tell them when people ask what they are they can tell them a Funky Disco King
