Are sci fi franchises other than the big two worth experiencing?

As someone who has been a fan of Doctor Who since 1972, my answer would be “yes”.

I also like Blake's 7, Farscape, Firefly, X-Files, Fringe, Stargate, Orphan Black, Continuum, The Man In the High Castle, The 3% on Netflix, Futurama, the Battlestar Galactica reboot, The Expanse, and Babylon 5. I'm a fan of sci-fi that does a great job of world-building and creating complex characters. I started watching Dr. Who when I was a kid. My first Doctor was the 5th. My favorite Star Trek is DS9 although I do have a soft spot for Next Gen since it was first foray into the world.

Why was sci fi more popular in the 90s and 2000s? Were we more optimistic?
