What do YOU think happens when a cat is declawed?

we rent a brand new 2 family house and we have a cat who IS NOT declawed and he ruined all the windows in the house. We still won't declaw him. We've decided that when we move, we'll take the time and fix each and every window (which means, sanding, filling, painting.. we have about 20 windows in the house

But I'm also the type of mom who isn't worried about my kid being scratched by a dog or cat. :confused3 If there's no permanent injury, I don't worry. Yup, I signed up for Mean Mommy status when kiddo turned two, thank you very much! :)

Brandie

My kids have been scrathed by our cats to many times to count..I've even scratched my kids. I'm not cutting of the tips of my fingers to prevent it either

Both of my cats are declawed. I have 2 indoor cats, along with 2 dogs. My husband is not quite the animal lover as I am.But he tolerates all my furbabies, because he loves me. I can tell you, when my 1 year old kitty started eyeballing DH's leather recliner for a scratching post, DH told me if that cat ruined his chair, that cat would be out the door so fast it would make my head spin. Off to the vet we went for a front declaw. That was 7 years ago, and my cat is fine, still frisky, and still has a home! I have a new kitty that is still under a year, and we had her declawed also. Yeah, I'm sure it doesn't feel good, but they both came home with pain meds, and didn't need them. They seemed fine, and happy even. Like many others have said,If this is what you have to do to ensure your pets don't tear up your house, and that they still have a happy home, then by all means, it needs to be done.

I'm an excellent pet owner and I cherish and nurture my pets. But I'm not going to let animals tear up my furniture. I put that in the same category as a pet using the bathroom all over the house instead of a litter box, and I'm not willing to put up with that, either. I love my pets, but they are animals, and I am not going to have my furniture destroyed because of them.
:confused3 But its just furniture! Animals have thoughts and feelings. And should be treated better than furniture. I feel bad for your cats since they clearly rank below the furniture. :sad2:

I'll join you. All of my kitties are de-clawed and all future kitties will be declawed. They were just fine after the surgery. If someone doesn't want their cats declawed, don't declaw them but don't think you are a better pet owner, you aren't.

Neutering is "mutilating" an animal too..... Also, my cats came home a few hours after being declawed and there were NO bandages or blood AT ALL.

My cats are declawed too, after replacing every door frame in the house my husband said the cats go outside or declaw and he was serious. I wont have my cats live outside, because we all know what happens when you have neighbors that hate cats or they run into a dog that hates cats...or they get hit by a car. SO declaw it was all were fine and 7 yrs later they are happy little girls and my DH is happy nothing is getting ruined.

Yeah Yeah i know about soft paws, but after being bitten by both for holding them down to do it that wasnt about to happen again.

Op go hang out on Makeupalley.com... the love to talk about declawing cats there.

Bring on the flames folks....

Then call me naive. I have a feeling no matter what source I posted you all would consider it oversensationalized. So be it. Feel free to do a google search on your own then. If it such a non -issue - then why is it illegal in almost every other country?

I do not want to "cat off" with anyone. Actually, what does that mean?

I didn't start this thread to be mean or to be hateful. Honestly. I (naively) assumed that there were people that just didn't know. I do not know how it makes me feel to know that people do know and that they just do not care.

The rescue group I work with also takes in declawed cats, we would never let it be a choice of declaw or death - they would ALWAYS have a home with one of our wonderful fosters. But - yes. We do ask that adoptors not declaw and we tell them why. I am sure there are people that lie and say they aren't going to and do it anyway. But we try.

I just do not feel that my furniture it more important than any of my cats.
What about your eye?

I think the philosphy is that if a household agrees with an elective surgery that can cause permanent damage or death of their cat, that isn't classified as a "good home."

There is anaesthesia (help me out with the spelling of that--I never get it right!) involved, which always brings a chance of death.
What about the anesthesia when spaying/neutering or teeth cleaning? :confused3

Mine are declawed too and I just rescued a kitten from the woods behind my house and she will be fixed and declawed soon too. I have a baby on the way and I can't risk having her scratched. It's also not fair to my older cats to have a kitten running around able to scratch them.

This baby kitten would have been dead if I hadn't set up a trap to catch her. She was living in the woods with opossum, fox and 112 degree heat index. She is sooo happy now and she will have a loving home forever but she will have to be declawed so she won't scratch the new baby.

:rotfl: :rotfl: If you have worked with rescue groups then you KNOW how strongly people feel about this subject. I can not believe you didnt think this was going to start a debate .

PS most rescue groups I know of also take in declawed cats.

Thank you for assumming we must be uneducated. Oh and thanks for the unsolicited education.

I was uneducated when it came to cat declawing, at least until a few years ago..I would still prefer a cat be declawed than go to the pound or not be adopted though.
I'm also a mean mom because I lever really worried about my kids being scratched..

I think you are missing the point here, Yzerbear. Treating my pets better than the furniture doesn't equate to letting them destroy it. My cats are well-loved, well treated and spoiled to death. They are the two luckiest cats on the planet. But they aren't going to destroy my furniture. Having them declawed allows me to have pets and nice furniture at the same time.

OHH for all us uneducated folks out there, look into Laser declawing the next time you choose to declaw your kitty.

I had my kitties neutered with lasers.. That's great that they also declaw that way.

I had NO idea they did neutering that way either.. .good to know!
Our girls are knocking on 10 yrs so I havent had to look into that in a long time thank goodness!

I'm with Virgo10 on this one...

I have 10 Ragdoll cats. Not one of them are declawed. None scratch me, the furniture or the carpet. The scratching posts - that's another story (I recover them every three or four months) It actually takes me less that five minutes each Sunday to clip all their claws.

My babies go to a Cat only vet who steadfastly refuses to declaw. And yes, I had my son circumcised but would never consider cutting off the tips of his fingers!

I have had declawed cats over the years and took quite some convincing not to do it with these babies. Now, I'm a convert!!

I just chose the phrase "cat off" because it sounded funny to me, and because you so clearly want to make this into a competition about who is the better pet owner. You make some assumptions about declawing that you assume I must share, and that's where you are wrong. I don't share any of your opinions about declawing. I don't think it's cruel, or barbaric, or anything but a safe and sensible solution to a problem. I wouldn't send any pet of mine to the type of medical facility you described in your post from the vet tech - I wouldn't have any procedure performed on any animnal of mine without the proper level of medication. I'm not sure why you seem unable to understand that.

What do you think of vets who perform this procedure?? I have this image of people picketing outside of vet clinics similiar to those that do so at abortion clinics. I just did not realize this was such a passionate debate.:confused3
