What do you think about the ban on light bulbs

The mercury part of it is troubling. Does anyone have a place where they can recycle these? We sure don't.

I have an eye condition that requires the brightest light possible for me to see just about anything and then I still sometimes need a lighted magnifier. This will become a quality of life issue for me. I didn't know about it but this will not be good news for me. I am sick of the government running my life but you get what you vote for. I would never bother to recycle the lights just like I don't bother recycling anything else. It's just not a priotity for me to be honest. I guess I will start stocking up on lights too.

Almost any store that sells them can recycle them. Home Depot, Lowes, Ikea are just a few. I've actually have yet to replace any of the bulbs.

If you want to complain about mercury... look at how much is in a thermostat. And the digital ones are just as cheap and much better than the old ones. But guess what, they still have the old ones selling right along side the digital ones.

And I have a lamp that takes a mini bulb, but using the CFL makes it stick out the top. I've gotten over it.

Just about any time the government bans one thing and forces another it has more to do with somebody making money on the deal and it's not you and me. Somewhere down the road there will be a flap over people getting sick from all the mercury, but those who stand to make a profit in the meantime will be long gone with the bucks.

If you really want to save money and conserve energy, simply use only as much light as you need. Some years ago I was having breakfast with the president of the electric utility company I worked for and he commented that (referring to high bill complaints) people need to realize that every time they flip a light switch they are making a "purchase decision." I know dozens of people who keep the lights (and TVs, etc.) on in every room whether there's someone in there or not and then complain about how high their electric bills are.

LED's are the future I think, so once they're closer to a regular price and more availability, it will be better

You should skip the florescent bulbs and move into the LED bulbs. I think you will be VERY happy with those. They are very bright lights.

We have the CF bulbs in most of our fixtures but we have dimmer lights and we can't use them in those. We have one outdoor fixture that burns out the CF bulbs in about 3 days but our regular old inside lightbulbs have been working just fine in there for over a year (it is a flood light but we have some 60 watt bulbs in there because the CF flood lights burnt out and since the 60 watts are working fine, why spend $10 on a flood light).

Not that thrilled about OUR Government telling us WHAT kind of Light bulbs we can use....next they will be telling us what kind of underwear to wear!:mad:

well, I have always said the there SHOULD be a law about who can wear spandex!!!:lmao:

Another exemption to the new rule is halogen bulbs and I've noticed that halogen is becoming more available in different sizes. Those things rock!!! Much brighter light than anything else. They even have them in chandelier sizes now. I've been doing a mix though, as they do give off more heat.

Actually they government isn't telling you what light bulbs you can use, otherwise they'd go house to house removing all the older ones.

I beg to differ. They will be telling you what kind not to use when they won't allow you to buy the incandescent bulbs. I have no problem with people using the mercury bulbs. Just don't tell me I can't use the incandenscent ones.

Correct, they are banning the sale of incandescent bulbs basically, thus making it hard to buy non-CFLs/LEDs. Unfortunately people rarely change their buying habits unless they are forced to (lack of product availability) or the cost is extremely high. The law decided to eliminate the choice, but they very well could have added a $5.00 tax on non-CFLs as well, which may have been a better choice in the end.

We replaced all of our lights 3 years ago with CFLs, it was the best decision ever made. We've only needed to replace on bulb and that was a 3-Way CFL that burned out when we were having power issues in our neighborhood. Since then the prices have come down even further and the number of choices are even greater (color/temp choices, sizes, watts, etc.). The only ones I think are still an issue are the three way bulbs, they're still pretty large, and many lights that could accept non-CFL 3-Ways from a size perspective cannot handle a CFL 3-way.

Locally we can recycle CFLs at any home remodeling store (Lowe's, Home Depot) plus there are some other places you can recycle them.

People that worry about mercury should look into all the other places Mercury exists in your life, you'd be amazed how much you are put in contact with daily. Mercury is not dangerous unless its inhaled or ingested.

I am not sure I have an opinion on which light I like better, However, don't tell me what I can and can't purchase, at that pint I will decide that I like the old lightbulbs better, that's the way I roll. The Govt should stay out, well except for the spandex lol.

Now here is where I pt on the flame suit. I don't recycle. Sorry, too much of a pain in the butt to me. We are very limited on what they will take, and I don't believe that our recycle people will ever except these light bulbs. There is no way on earth that I am going to take those stupid things to Home Depot or Lowes. I would waste a ton of my gas and those places are crazy on the weekends. So in the trash they will go.

I watch my spending at home with turning off lights, keeping heat and the air down. Turning off TV and things like that. I also drive a big l SUV, won't give that up either. I choose to pay for the gas, and it is my choice not the govt's.

Rant Over.

I don't care for it either, but the mandates have been and continue to be ongoing....

low water usage toilets
low flow showerheads
lightbulbs
changes to washing machines (you can no longer buy a machine that lets you set the water levels to low-med-high)
no more freon

hope that water heaters aren't the next to go; not a fan of those instant ones

If they give off a more fluorescent type of light..then count me in as one to stock up on bulbs. Hate fluorescent light. Very harsh..and depressing.:headache: I also don't like being told what type of light bulb to use in my own home. :sad2:

The low water use toilets worked out real well for conservationists. They get flushed more than once quite often because they don't flush the first or second time.
