What do you think about Aldi?

Oh My Goodness! Aldi opened up this morning and it was soooooo crowded. You would think an IKEA was open or something. People told us they had been lined up since 3 in the morning! We had to get back but the parking lot was JAMMED packed.

I cannot wait until the crowds are gone to see what the fuss is all about!

I think Aldi's isn't worth the trouble and the drive. I can often get prices just as good at regular grocery stores.

Seriously? wow. I don't think Aldi's is anything to write home about. I went with my mom last week and I hated it. It was a really small store, the selection wasn't that great, and they don't give you bags and you have to pay for the cart (yes you get it back, but still). weird store. :confused3

Kinda sounds like the Sav-a-Lot stores we have here. I go occasionally. I don't mind buying off brands of most things, so do save some money, and I don't mind bringing my own bags. Don't have to pay for the cart, don't understand why any grocery store would make you do that though. :confused3 They don't have a very good selection of produce, mostly just the basics but when you want bananas they are always 3 pounds for $1, my regular store they are as high as 59 cents per pound. I go when I want to stock up on pastas, sauces, canned soups, etc.

You put a quarter in the cart, and you get the quarter back when you return the cart to the appropriate place. it makes people return their carts, so they don't have to make the employees go get them. i guess this lets them have fewer employees, making prices lower. :confused3

There's one under construction literally across the street from us.Would be nicer if it wasn't a six lane street though.lol

It will be good to have a place that close.Hopefully we will find many things we like.If only some, maybe being so close will help with the two trip mindset.

The weird part for me is that they are building it in the spot where a Lone Star steakhouse used to be.Sure doesn't seem like it can be very big,or have any kind of parking.

I only buy produce and wine at our Aldi. I'm a little scared of everything else, to be honest! The produce is always fresh and way, way, way cheaper than our other local stores.

I love aldi. I was shopping at walmart (which is enough to get you crucified over here) for two before, and when I switched to aldi, our weekly grocery bill dropped by $20-$40.

You can't get everything there, and its almost all a "generic" brand that you've probably never seen before. But the quality is very good, in my experience.

Even if you don't shop there all the time, the canned food is at least half the price of walmart. Its a good place to go once every few months and stock up on things like canned food.

ETA: they also have some household items, like cat litter, soap, shampoo, tissues, etc.
I have friends who say the same thing regarding shopping at Aldi's. There is not one conveniently close to me, so I have never been there.

Wait, I thought Aldi and Trader Joes were owned by the same people. When I looked it up on Google it compared it to TJ's. Hmmm

I think the owners of each are brothers, but the stores are very different.
I have never been in an Aldis so can't say anything about it.
but it doesn't seem like something I would like anyway.

You are thinking of Aldo :rotfl2:

I see Aldi as the Dollar Tree of grocery stores. It's mostly all generic stuff... GREAT for if you need elbow macaroni, spaghetti noodles, etc., not so good for other stuff... like if you want Kelloggs-brand cereal, or real Oreo's... Certified Angus beef, fresher produce, etc.
Thank you!! I couldn't put into words (at least nice ones) what I was thinking. This about summed it up!! :thumbsup2
