What do you think about a DVC AP....

I know you can get an AP with a DVC discount. But what I am suggesting is an AP that we can purchase, renew and re-use without having to go to the guest relations each time.

Once you purchase and receive your DVC AP card the first time, you can use it for as long as you have the membership. It would be like our members card. We don't need to get new cards every time it expires. We can choose to renew or if we decide not to renew right away, we can re-purchase whenever we want using the same card and number. It's essentially a reloadable card. This can easily be done online or over the phone through MS. No waiting for the card to be printed. It will save time and, at the very least, it will save on cards.

What do you think?

Add to this an option to make monthly payment on a credit card and I am all in.

count me in as well on the paying monthly

One major thing going against it is that there isn't a media that would last the life of your contract. The current paper stock? Mine's a little ratty looking by a year's time. Plastic stock? One, I read reports that the turnstyles don't like the plastic stock as well as the paper. Two, you'd still need replacements as the magnetic strip wore over time (similar to why you get replacement credit cards every 3-4 years).

I have a Seaworld Platinum pass. (Good for all 3 Seaworlds, both Busch Gardens, and several water parks.) I bought it maybe 8 to 10 years ago.
They simply charge my credit card monthly until I cancel it. I never have to go to guest services. It's made of plastic like a credit card, so it's still in good shape.

The best part: I still pay the same monthly rate. They've never increased it even though the rate for new passes has gone up every year!

Now, if Disney did this.......

Currently, my AP is on a plastic card that is the same as the KTTW resort cards since I purchased my APs at the BWV guest relations/concierge desk. I was quite happy to have it since my previous paper card always gave me a problem at the turnstile at least every 3rd or 4th time I used it (and this was when I just got it, the paper was definitely not worn). I've used the plastic one at least 27 times and I didn't have one problem with it.

I agree that you would need still need a replacement for the plastic card, but it wouldn't be every year. I think, if it's not lost or damaged, it can last at least 5 years. My credit cards are replaced often, but I use my credit cards far more than I would use my AP. I'm only at Disney for 28 days out of a year so my card would hold up a lot better than someone who uses it weekly. So it
would be up to the member to request a replacement when needed. If I only have to do that once every 4-5 years, I'm good with that.

This is what I'm suggesting!:thumbsup2

I wonder how well/long the RFID tickets (they are experimenting with at EPCOT, the turnstyle still needs the finger scan) would hold up.

Sorry to burst your bubble here, but you just described the annual pass for Universal Studios. That's exactly how they do it. I've had the same AP for US/IOA for 4 years now. No need to update my passholder webpage at US/IOA because I've had the same passholder ID number for several years. My renewal is Jan. 21 and right before that date I just call and renew my pass then I show up with my same old pass and it continues to work. As for looking ratty, that isn't an issue at all. If it started looking bad, I would just go to the guest service office (inside the park--shorter line) and have them print me a new one. So this is nothing new...at least it's not for US/IOA. I've always been surprised that Disney didn't do the same thing.

And are you paying the same rate as when you first got the pass 4 years ago?

I'd love for Disney to adopt this approach. They probably won't just because it is a Universal idea vs a Disney idea.

No...you are so funny....actually sometimes it's cheaper. Actually when I bought my preferred annual pass it was a special BOGO. You paid for one year and got the second year FREE (not something we would ever see at Disney for sure). It just depends on the current promotion. One year it was the renewal price for 15 months. It had been est. $99 a year to renew until last year when that Harry Potter guy moved in. Now the renewal for the preferred pass is $159 + tax for only 12 months. What a let down. I make it a habit never to renew too soon if no promotion is going on. If there is a promotion going on, I renew sooner. I've been a Disney passholder since 1995, but only a US/IOA passholder for 4+ years now. I do have to say that some of the US/IOA passholder perks are pretty good. Until that Harry guy moved in we use to get 50% off tickets for friends and family several times a year and great prices on our rooms. We stayed at Portofino this August for 50% off our room.
