What do you set your heat at?

We just got a letter from our energy company about the rise in natural gas prices. They are expecting our heating bills will be almost double. On the notice they have last year's usage amounts and the price so people can plan and be prepaired.

They also give energy saving recommendations.

They recommend having your heat set between 65-68 during the day and below 65 at night. :cold:

Mine is currently at 72, I'm wearing a fleece sweatshirt over a t-shirt and I'm cold!

Now if I wasn't home all day I would lower the temp but are people really comfortable at 65 degrees. I admit that I run cold. I just don't get hot. My blood pressure is low and I'm usually anemic but burrrr!.

Well I'm trying to leave it at 72 and lower at night. It's in the mid 50's here today so I know I'll be running the heat more when it gets colder. I just can afford $500+ bills so I guess I'll just have to pile on the blankets!

My house is kind of drafty, so I don't feel REALLY comfy unless my downstair thermostat is at 74. But, I'm trying to keep it at 72 and I guess I can live with that.

Last night though, I woke up and I was just cold (I have lots of blankets so that's not the problem). The thermostat was reading that it was 66 in my bedroom. I was just uncomfortable. So, I'm just going to see if I can get used to it.

Also, I am wondering if the natural gas will go as high as they predicted. They made those predictions back when I know the regular gas was in the $3 per gallon range. We are now down to $1.99 per gallon of gas so, I'm logically assuming, that natural gas prices will come down also? I mean, last year at this time we were paying close to $1.99 for gasoline. I'm just hoping they are now overblowing this.

I have mine set at 65-68 all winter. I've been on a payment plan with my heating company for the last 2 years (the first year we paid almost $250./month and this year it's under $200./month for 9 months out of the year) and I have a credit of over $1,000.

I don't like too much heat and nobody has ever been cold in my house, so I just keep it there. In fact, I have my ceiling fan on in the bedroom because it's still too hot for me while I'm sleeping. I wear pants pajamas downstairs and shorts pajamas to bed. Thankfully, the house holds the heat. I also wash in cold water and that seems to help a lot.

We keep the heat set at 67-68. The thermostat will let the temperature drop down to 66 for a while before kicking on the heat, so the house can range from 66-68 degrees in the livingroom (near the thermostat) and our bedroom down at the other end of the house can get down to 64/65 at night.

We just bought insulated drapes for the large windows in our livingroom and bedroom, which ought to help keep the rooms a little warmer at night.

We do tend to pile on the blankets and wear sweaters and sweatshirts during winter.

Living in New England and leave the heat on 64 all the time. Our home is very well insulated though and I am 8 months pregnant so maybe the hot flashes are not the norm! HA!

Perhaps an inexpesive electric ceramic heater for your bedroom at night. The rest of the house can stay cooler but you'll be warmer in your room and I don't think they cost much to run. Just an idea.

We have ours set at 66 on the days I work from home, on the other days, we set it temp down to 62 for the day... we wear lots of sweatshirts, etc ..

Well, ours is set at 66-68. It used to be set at 74-76!!!! I just get cold easily. However, I am getting used to it. I pay the electric and gas, so you betcha I am going to be scrooge with the thermostat this year. I also wash clothes and dishes on the cold cycle. I am debating on wheter to buy new drapes; the thermal kind. We have a very drafty house, so it might help keep the cold out around the windows.

68 during the day (even when we're home) and 65 at night.

I have it set on 70 all the time. We have very large windows and it can get pretty cold during the winter. But I've told the kids (husband included :teeth: ) that they will just have to put more clothes on this year.

Oh my gosh! I never thought I'd have the hottest house! We set ours at 77 and I still get cold. Geez...Maybe I should start lowering it, but I worry about the kids getting cold.

In the winter we set ours at 73, but that still seems to chilly for me. Which is funny because in the summer I'll set it to 71 or 72! At night we set it to 68.

We keep our set about 65 all the time,(in the winter) it is cold, but we wear lots of layers, long underwear, etc. I can't afford to keep it set higher than that!

We also have a wood-burning fireplace that helps keep the first floor warmer. :sunny:

I've been keeping mine at about 63. I don't really like the heat-- for some reason being in a warm house or room kind of makes me feel ill, and having it blowing on me is horrible for my sinuses.

The only time I really mind the cold is when I'm stepping out of the shower in teh morning. Brrrrrrrrrr!

We set our heat at 67 when we are home, 64 during the day when we are at work and 62 at night.

We have ours at 74 in the day and 68 at night and I refuse to be cold even if it means spending less on other areas. I'm home all day and I refuse to be cold. We don't spend the summer hot even with huge a/c bills so I refuse to spend the winter cold. They originally told us to plan on about double per month in the winter but they've now downgraded that to about 30 dollars more per month which I can deal with. Thankfully our natural gas company has a lot of it's own "wells" so our heating bills aren't too terrible. If it ends up being 30 more a month the highest bill I should have based on last years freezing cold winter will be 90 so for that I can deal. We also just stocked up on heaters from home depot that they had on sale for 30 dollars and we put those in the kids rooms downstairs and in our family room because our electricity bill is lower in the winter.

There is no way I could stand my house lower than maybe 72 in the day and I refuse to do so. I don't know how you guys can keep it so low...more power to you! I really wish I could but I can't.

66 during the day whether we are home or not. 72 in the morning to get us out of bed. I think about 65 in the middle of the night.

We are all going to be wearing lots of layers this winter at our house. We have a big two story house and big heating bills to go with it.

Burrrrr Rabbit! I thought I set mine low. I set mine at 68 at night and 70 in the day. But since we moved into the big house I might need to set it lower, I'm really scared to see the full month's power bill.

68 during the day and 65 at night with the programmable thermostat. We have been using the wood burning fireplace in the family room and as long as that and the kitchen are comfortable, that is all that matters. I have been telling DD she will just have to wear slippers and warm shirts because I am not turning it up this year!
