What do you say when someone says something mindblowingly stupid to you??

OMG! I don't think I would have been able to say anything!

BTW...sounds like Paul is doing great! My DS was 4 weeks early and will be 1 on Friday and is only about 20 pounds. So your Paul isn't too far behind my DS. :)

I just love reading your posts to see the picture of your lil one there. He's so adorable!

I remember YEARS ago when someone asked me why did I like cats better than people I said "because cats NEVER eventually say something STUPID..."

Thank God for little Paul and as I tell my son daily, people will always say something we don't like, the only thing we can control is our REACTION to it. Say NOTHING.

Well... now you know why checkout girl was her career of choice.

It's not in what you say to them, it's all in the look you give them.;)

My dd is very fair. She has very blue eyes and very light blonde hair. My eyes are dark brown, and my hair is a weirdish reddish/brownish/blonde color. I've had several people say something about how she must take after her daddy because she sure doesn't look like me. I tell them, no, her daddy has a moustache, she doesn't.;) Her daddy has dark hair and brown eyes.:p She's the spitting image of a younger cousin of mine though.:)

that was her attempt at a little humour, albeit very bad....

Some people only open their mouths to change feet...

I took our little guy, Paul, to the grocery store with me today. In case you don't know, Paul was born 12 weeks early and weighed only 1lb and 7oz at birth. He spent over 3 months in the NICU and survived many close calls before coming home to us. And we still can't be absolutely certain that his prematurity won't have any lasting affects. While he was in the hospital (2 hours from our home) my husband and I basically lived out of a suitcase and slept in the hospital waiting room. It was the hardest 3 months of my life. Thankfully, he is doing absolutely GREAT now. However, he is still really tiny. He's 14 months now and only about 17 pounds, but he's catching up. :sunny:

Anyway, this idiot checker at the grocery store is going on and on about how cute he is and she asks how old he is. I told her was 14 months and she looked shocked (as usual) so I gave her the quick version of his story.

Anyway, she says to me, " Wow, you're really lucky. I had to carry all mine the whole nine months."

I just kind of stared at her with my mouth open, collected my change and left. I didn't know what to say.

My twins were preemies also. 27 weekers, 1 pound 11 ounces and 1 pound 10 ounces. They are now 6 and going into 1st grade this fall. All I can say is that I know EXACTLY how you felt. Most people don't. If they did not go through sometime like that its hard sometimes to imagine all the tubes they were hooked up to, all the surguries. I had a doctor tell me one baby was not going to make it and I should send for a priest. Well we did and we had them have an emergency baptism. Well he did not die and had his first swim lesson today:D Just keep your head high and hang on because the rollar coaster ride is not over yet.;) PM me if you have any questions or just want to talk to anothre preemie mom. :sunny:

wow~ I thpought this only happened to us! At church Sunday, I had 3 people ask me if we loved our son. He is 7 weeks old an is adopted! This is not to mention many others (including family members) who have asked us that since we brought him home from the hospital! UGH!!!!!

AND ~ then they ask us if our birthmom knows what birth control is!!! Well, for people like us who wish to adopt, I am glad she wasn't using birth control that time!!!!!! I am just glad she decided to place the child in our care!

Good luck to you! Sounds like your little fella is growing!!! My cousin weighed one pound and 11 ounces almost 20 yrs ago and is now doing awesome!

tends to mutter heres your sign as he walks away from the brainless.

Sometimes, when I' m dealing with people like that, I.E."Boy, Maybe MY child should get a brain tumor so HE can go to Disney!!!" (yes, I had a parent from school tell me that recently.)

Oh boy I am used to hearing things like that!! When Matt was sick I had gotten him so many things like rides in blimps becuase he was fasinated by them, A disney wish trip ,a cruise etc....I think the kids in his school were the worst...oh you get this stuff because you have a brain tumor and you think your are special....uggg....to me he was special and I am glad to have goten him all those things before he passed away!...one of the worst was after a brain surgery he got to wear a hat in school since his head was a mess and one kid pulled it off (knowing he was sick) and said "what do you think you are special and can wear a hat in school??" the school has a no hat rule but for cancer kids or brain tumor kids they bend it after surgery or during chemo when they have no hair.

 I am shocked how dumb people can be. I don't even know how to respond, I am just amazed how dumb people can be.

Just to put it in perspective (size wise), my nephew will be 4 in November.... normal pregnancy and delivery, not premature, no medical problems. He weighs about 23 pounds. He is the TINIEST 3 1/2 year old I have ever seen. God makes us in all different shapes and sizes! .............................P

You did the right thing. You said nothing!
like a previous poster said, let the statement just lay there.

I dont know if I could have bit my tongue...I would have most likely bit her head off. Something to the effect of "yeah I was real lucky. I slept in a hospital for 3 months worrying if my child would die or not..." Then something like...we should all be so lucky. (rude and sarcastic) Then I would have walked off. I am one of those people that just want people to understand how stupid they can come off.

What do I say when someone says something mind-numbingly stupid ?

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. President"

:)

(Sorry, couldn't resist........I liked the OP's actual response...What can you say to someone like that ? As the father of a premie, I don't know what I'd have said in your situation, but it probably would have been considerably less polite than simply walking away ;) )

How about "wow, it must be something else living in your world."

She's an idiot

I got a lot of that too-

My dd was 2 weeks late and weighed in at over 8lbs at birth, but only weighed 16lbs at 14 months... she was just a small baby!

She has finally caught up now at the age 7. She was always the smallest kid in her class and daycare.
