I took our little guy, Paul, to the grocery store with me today. In case you don't know, Paul was born 12 weeks early and weighed only 1lb and 7oz at birth. He spent over 3 months in the NICU and survived many close calls before coming home to us. And we still can't be absolutely certain that his prematurity won't have any lasting affects. While he was in the hospital (2 hours from our home) my husband and I basically lived out of a suitcase and slept in the hospital waiting room. It was the hardest 3 months of my life. Thankfully, he is doing absolutely GREAT now. However, he is still really tiny. He's 14 months now and only about 17 pounds, but he's catching up. :sunny:

Anyway, this idiot checker at the grocery store is going on and on about how cute he is and she asks how old he is. I told her was 14 months and she looked shocked (as usual) so I gave her the quick version of his story.

Anyway, she says to me, " Wow, you're really lucky. I had to carry all mine the whole nine months."

I just kind of stared at her with my mouth open, collected my change and left. I didn't know what to say.

What a dope! What does she think that premature birth is like a pregnancy fast pass or something?

I know exactly what you mean - when my DD was a little over a year old she was diagnosed with Glycogen Storeage Disease and we were going through a pretty rough time adjusting. I was working at a company in their HR department, I had a lady that lives just a short distance from me come in to fill out her paper work to start and she came right out and told me that she had heard my little girl wasn't going to live much past the age of 2. To say the least, I was totally in shock and I can imagine my jaw dropped to the floor. I was speechless. Well today my DD is almost 8 yo and doing wonderful.

Hugs for you - some people have no brains!!!!

Walk away. When people are that stupid/insensitive, it's a waste of breath to form a reply.

And I bet she would think delivering a 1 lb baby would be wonderful for her too..... think how "easy" pushing would be.

Some people have no impulse control between their brain and mouth. Of course you have to have a brain 1st......

Ok the cashier was an idiot but MeanLaureen had me falling out of my seat.

Sometimes, when I' m dealing with people like that, I.E."Boy, Maybe MY child should get a brain tumor so HE can go to Disney!!!" (yes, I had a parent from school tell me that recently.) all I have to do is just stand there, look at them and let the stupid comment sort of sit between us until they get it. Sometimes, they actually get it, and if they don't, I just say, "okaygottagobye!" and leave really fast. I can't be bothered.

It sure takes all kinds doesn't it?

I'm glad to hear things have worked out so well for your lil guy and your entire family. My GF delivered a 2 LB. 11 Oz. lil guy who spent months in the hospital too, having watched her, I have a good idea of what you went through. It certainly wasn't easy for my friend! Just count your blessings and ignore stupid people like that!

That is just utterly amazing. Kust proves that you don't have to have a brain to exist.

Hopefully her idiocy doesn't transcend into her kids...

OMG! I'm laughing like a crazy woman.

I don't know if there's anything you can say to someone that dumb.

At the risk of sounding insensitive,

:rotfl:

A pregnancy express lane.

"Six months or less"

OMG! I don't think I would have been able to say anything!

BTW...sounds like Paul is doing great! My DS was 4 weeks early and will be 1 on Friday and is only about 20 pounds. So your Paul isn't too far behind my DS. :)
