I took our little guy, Paul, to the grocery store with me today. In case you don't know, Paul was born 12 weeks early and weighed only 1lb and 7oz at birth. He spent over 3 months in the NICU and survived many close calls before coming home to us. And we still can't be absolutely certain that his prematurity won't have any lasting affects. While he was in the hospital (2 hours from our home) my husband and I basically lived out of a suitcase and slept in the hospital waiting room. It was the hardest 3 months of my life. Thankfully, he is doing absolutely GREAT now. However, he is still really tiny. He's 14 months now and only about 17 pounds, but he's catching up.
Anyway, this idiot checker at the grocery store is going on and on about how cute he is and she asks how old he is. I told her was 14 months and she looked shocked (as usual) so I gave her the quick version of his story.
Anyway, she says to me, " Wow, you're really lucky. I had to carry all mine the whole nine months."
I just kind of stared at her with my mouth open, collected my change and left. I didn't know what to say.
