What do you say when people brag about how much they spend?

This if for frugal people. I would much rather brag about how much I saved, not how much I spent.

I have a SIL who has lots of money and loves to brag about it. She love to brag about her $500.00 shoes and all the lavaish things she owns. Once she was bragging about the hundreds and hundreds of dollars she spent on her coat. I said to her "You paid that much for that coat?!!! I only paid 25 cents for my DDs coat.

I smile and say oh thats nice, or yes those are lovely shoes and I keep my mouth shut about my saving. When their credit runs out or they lose their job or whatever other life event happens that they aren't prepared for I don't want them to think for a minute that I have money to lend.

I tell them I am glad they're happy with their purchase and then later when I'm alone I feel smug about how I'm not "wasting" money. :rotfl:

Honestly, though, I don't worry about how other people spend. It's possible she has $500 shoes and $30k in credit card debt. I'd rather have $50 shoes and no credit card debt. ;)

i don't say anything. i consider myself very lucky and i am working hard to be in their position. however, when i get there, i won't be bragging. i think bragging is just them being insecure about other things. i would never tell anyone how much my stuff costs unless they ask and if they have a good reason for asking.

I think that bragging is unattractive regardless of who is doing it. That applies to both those who have to tell you how much they spend and the frugal people who take smug satisfaction in telling the world about what tightwads they are.

They both get the same response: Much happiness with your <insert item purchased here>.

I hate it when people ask me where I bought something or how much did it cost! Usually I bought it at goodwill for $3.99! I just bought a brand new $200 Dooney Burke purse for $7.99!

I agree with Angie - no credit card debt is much better than expensive shoes, etc!

I have found it makes people uncomfortable when I tell them how much I save... I'm trying to stop. But, just say, oh that's nice, good for you and move on. She just wants recognition and/or praise. Peoples opinions matter to her.

why does it matter to you. it's not like she's spending your money. sounds like a personal problem...

:thumbsup2 Well said. I totally agree with this.... and you know, $ 50.00 shoes can look just as nice as $ 500 shoes without the debt. I'll take no credit card debt any day of the week !!

I am not sure how I would react as no one in my life brags about the money they spend. I can't even wrap my mind around 500dollar shoes. I thought the 90 I paid on my walking shoes was a lot. Guess I am small potatoes :lmao:
But seriously if someone needs to brag about how much they spend on stuff you should probably feel sorry for them.

Sorry, just want to interrupt to comment on your Doxies! They are gorgeous!!:goodvibes:thumbsup2

Yep.

I don't know many people who talk or brag about how much or how little they spend; those who do seem to be preoccupied with how others perceive them. I don't tell people how much something cost unless they specifically ask me. If they are interested in purchasing the same item I tell them where to get it as inexpensively as they can.

My response - if there was a need for one at all - would have nothing to do with how much or how little the item cost.. It would probably be along the lines of, "Oh - those shoes are nice.." - or - "That looks like a really warm coat.." :goodvibes

Since it's not my money they're spending, I don't really feel the need to make a comment - and certainly not a negative one..:)

I have a "friend" like that. I like telling her that I recently saw that same thing on sale and then give her a price that's half of what she paid. Not sure she cares, but sometimes I like being snotty

honestly, I don't care what other people make, don't make, spend, save, own, etc.etc. etc.
Though I actually find it a little irksome that often people on here are sure that anyone that spends more than they would, must have huge credit card debt and is going to be foreclosed in a matter of hours.

maybe she has a job where she makes a lot, and is expected to dress at that level
(cue op to say that no, she is a day away from living in a cardboard box in 3...2.....1....)

I don't say a word. I enjoy a little eye rolling in my head though! Years ago a former mom-friend of mine bought a luxury Suv with a $700 car payment, and I do think my jaw did drop a little!

I could not have said it better!!!!

I'm a Dave Ramsey follower - so when I see someone with a brand new car, I honestly feel sorry for them! People just don't have a clue! I love being debt free!
