Took my DS10 to the dentist yesterday for his routine cleaning/visit. I was :scared1: shocked when they charged me $126 for a cleaning and the dentist to poke around in his mouth for less then 2 minutes. I think they've upped their price since we were there 6 months ago. Is this the going rate?

I call my dentist Doc Hollywood. LOL. But he does fantastic work....I don't mind paying for skill and service. I don't think I've ever walked out of there for under 300 bucks, for anything.

I work for a dentist in a pretty pricy county in NY and we charge:

child's exam - $45. this is to have a Doctor,a trained, licensed medical professional, check your childs teeth, gums and other soft tissues, he/she is not just "poking around"

child's cleaning - $65.

child's flouride treatment - $45.

We also charge $45. for check-up xrays when necessary (usually once a year)

So depending on where you are located exactly, adjusting price for places with cheaper overhead costs and assuming this included the flouride treatment, what you paid sounds about right.

A routine cleaning and exam costs approximately $160 at the pediatric dentist I take my son to. It's about $140 when I go to my dentist. I do think the amount charged by the pediatric dentist is high but they are wonderful with kids and make the whole experience easier so I continue to pay it.

I pay approx $85 for a cleaning and exam at our pediatric dentist. WHen they need xrays it goes up but I can't remember how much. We did switch dentists about 10 years ago after we no longer had dental insurance. Our previous dentist had a newer practice and a fancy building to pay for which equaled higher prices.

I pay $135 for a pediatric dentist exam for my son. My insurance covers $30 of that.

fortunately we have dental insurance through my husbands work and we havent ever had to pay a penny for all three kids who have been going to dentists for the last 10 years. So it was a big shock to go to our first orthodontist and find out how much it will cost for one child!!!

My DD's dentist charges $130 for a routine cleaning/exam (and DD has braces so the cleaning takes longer).

Our dental insurance covers 100% of the cleaning/exam/x-rays (and fluoride once a year). I have to pay the $130 at the time of service and then the dentist's office files a claim with our dental insurance and the reimbursement check comes to me. The turn around is pretty fast so I usually see the check about a week later.

When I lost my job and my COBRA hadn't yet kicked in, I had to pay $209 for my cleaning. Routine cleaning by a hygienist, nothing else. Didn't see the dentist, didn't have x-rays, nothing.

Now if it's a cleaning with x-rays, it's $355.

I get my teeth cleaned 4x a year but my insurance only covers 2. For the ones I pay for, I pay $273. That's just for the cleaning, no dentist visit, no x-rays.

I hope that's for periodontal care like I need four times a year. The dentist does check what the hygienist has found each time, however. I have type 2 diabetes now and have always had issues with molars. A Sonicare Elite toothbrush has made a big difference for me as far as gum care.

I work for a dentist our cleaning fee is $71 adults and $54 for kids. We usually do Fltx on kids and it is $26, then the exam fee is $30. The xrays are done yearly ($49 for 4 bite wings and $90 for a full series every five years). A lot depends on where you live and a general dentist may cost less than a pediatric dentist.

I pay $65 for a regular cleaning, and go four times a year. My insurance only pays for two each year so I pay for two cleanings out of pocket.

OT, but I pay $50 twice a year to get my horse's teeth floated (sharp points filed off, very much like a cleaning for humans), PLUS the vet charges $25 to come to my house to clean them. So, getting my horse's teeth cleaned costs me more than my own teeth do. :)

i have dental insurance and the balance on my recent cleaning and xrays was $120. I almost fell off my chair, it seems the insurance pays less and less each yr

Our insurance covers 2 cleanings a year for free.

Out of pocket cost for a pediatric dentist is $56, $71 and $40 so $167. That is the cleaning charge, fluoride application and exam/checkup including bitewing xrays. Full mouth panaramic X-rays are an additional charge but I forgot how much those are, they are covered once every other year I think? My dd was going to need an additional 3 month cleaning so they told me how much it was without insurance but she ended up not needing it after all.

Glad to see Long Island isn't as crazy as I thought!! I pay about $160 for my DD5's pediatric dentist for a cleaning, checkup & flouride treatment (and a brand new Disney Princess toothbrush of her choice!). I've thought about taking her to my dentist...but I love the pediatric one!! I'd go there if I could! Last visit they did xrays & I think I paid about $225 for that visit.

I know I have to take DS who is almost 2...gonna stink! They don't give multiple child discounts! LOL I asked...

When do you all plan to switch from the pediatric dentist to a regular one for your kids? DD LOVES going to the dentist! She actually gets excited. :( I don't want that to change!!

I just took the boys this morning. Both boys hadf routine cleanings, flouride applications and dentists exams. My older son had 2 xrays and we bought MI paste. The total bill for this morning was 320.00
It's a lot of money and I know that I could pay less at a non pediatric dentist but it is worth it. My youngest is a little weary and the office is great. They have a big salt water tank on the cleaning areas so the kids have something to watch, the boys wear their sunglasses during the visit and most importantly, they don't make me feel rushed. That makes it worth it.

One went to the same pediadontist he had seen since toddlerhood right through college. Then we moved so the others went to a pediadontist until 18 and then switched to Mom and Dad and Grandmothers' dentist.

I have dental insurance (through the Fed Govt, my husband's employer) and they pay a whopping $17 for a cleaning. Our cleanings are about $135 out of pocket. Yup... that's just for a cleaning. They pay $0 for root canals, about $10 a filling, and nothing for x-rays. Anyone want govt dental coverage?

it's sad, really. sometimes I feel like they offer the benefit just so they can say they offer dental coverage
