What do you pay for a haircut/color or both?

I'm a hairdresser, used to work for Regis where we charged $30 for a cut, starting at $45 for all over color, starting at $70 for highlites.
Now I work out of my house, charge $10 for a cut ( $5 for kids), $50 for a cut and color. I ONLY use foils. I hate using the cap and not knowing where my highlights are going to go....not to mention the leopard spots!
Yes I agree!! I hate doing the cap!! I do however have a few customers that want only that, but I refuse to do it on hair longer than 2" above the shoulder...

and they totally messed it up. I should have taken a "before" but this is the "after"

It looks like that they didn't process the roots enough?

Cut & color $80 + tip. I started greying at 21, but didn't dye it until I was 33! Dyed my own for a while, but I have too much grey to handle on my own now. Plus, my hairdresser does a great job. I'd rather skimp on costs elsewhere in my life to pay for the good hair cut/color.

wow those southern states are a little less expensive but not by much. What is your favorite if any box color I would LOVE it if the hair dressers would answer this one!!!!!!!!!!!

Also can i go to the beauty supply store and buy a color? Does it work the same as the box colors or is there more of a science to it? I dont want to end up with green hair to save some $$$

For those of you who home color....what brand do use? Is it easy to apply for a first timer?

I had very blond highlights over the summer (I am naturally a dark brunette) and now they are growing out. I think it looks terrible and want to cover it up but I am nervous about doing it myself. Plus, even at the age of 26 I definitely have some greys. Any advice would be appreciated!

BTW, my last cut and highlight appt cost $130. Way too much in my opinion. I know all over color is cheaper, but I would still like to give it a try on my own and see if I am just as happy.

I'm a hairdresser slut. Really a one cut stand sort of girl. Sometimes I splurge - my last cut was $65, and I've paid $100 for all over color plus highlights. Sometimes its me, the cheap box of color from Walgreens, and the cut from Cost Cutters for $14.

Cost Cutters can be good, or it can be horrible. If you are lucky enough to get a regular stylist who does a good job, it can work just fine. However, its certainly a no-frills sort of experience. However, you can also get people who can't hack it in a "real" salon. I cried for two days after my last Cost Cutters haircut - and probably won't go back.

I've had some luck with Cost Cutters with the "spend a decent amount to get it cut in a salon once a year - have Cost Cutters trim it up every six weeks." However, that was how I ended up in tears - to me, telling someone to "trim" should not involve anyone cutting three inches off anywhere.

Had a wonderful hairdresser with a great eye for color who did my hair for a while - we actually had a "lasting relationship" and the $40 he charged me for a foil plus all over was worth every penny - three times better than the $19 box of Loreal with Highlights at home for twice the cost. However, he left (the reason I'm such a slut - I've been dumped by too many hairdressers - just when you start to think its a long term thing, they go and move or decide to stop cutting hair or switch to limited hours during the workday).

Paying more does not guarentee a better cut or color, but does seem to up your chances of getting one. And seems to add to the perks - i.e. if I go to Cost Cutters I get a cheap cut - but no shampoo, no blow dry and style. I spend three times as much and I'll get a shampoo, head and neck massage and blow dry, herbal tea - which turns getting a haircut from a utilitarian exercise into an hour mini-pamper.

Yes. That is exactly why I started going to a salon/spa to get my haircut. It kills me every time I pay $65 for a cut, but then I remember what happened before. I got THREE BAD haircuts in a row from Great Clips. These were all from different people. Everytime you go in there, there are different hair dressers??? Only the owner stays the same. One time people were asking me what happened to my hair after I got it cut? They thought I was in some sort of scissor accident. When more than one person asks you that, you know something is wrong. Another time my mom said something looked funny, so I went back to the salon and the owner looked at my hair and exclaimed "Oh my god"! That didn't sound good.

So, I have quit the Great Clips (except for the kids :rolleyes1 I'm willing to sacrifice their hair. :rotfl2: ) and haven't looked back.

I usually use L'Oreal Performing Preference and Excellence in Golden Blonde, BUT fair warning: it brings out any red you have in your hair. My hair was dishwater blonde with a barely noticeable bit of red and this dye makes it a slightly strawberry'ish blonde when it first is done. My hair reacts in a good way and very quickly to even the slightest sunlight though, and I end up with natural blonde highlights on top of that. SO, while I'm very happy with that color and brand, I know that there are certain caveats I have to share.

But I know L'Oreal has never damaged my hair.

Haircut $45, highlights $75 half head or $90 full head. Color is $60. I do my own color now and it is $9 every month for a box of Loreal blonde, works great for me. So now I spend $45 every 3 months on a cut.

$15.00 plus a $5.00 tip for my haircut. I color at home. Two of the last boxes were on clearance for $1.74 each, so that was a cheap color! Normally somewhere under $10 for the color.

I probably spend just around $100.00 per year on cuts and color.

I'm surprised that any customer would ASK for it! Considering how beautiful foils turn out....well to each her own.... I agree about refusing to do it on longer hair, it's just to painful for the client plus for me the hair is forever getting tangled!

Cut, color (base and foil in two colors) and style + tip at the salon I use is about $130.00.

I pay $15.00 + $5.00 tip for a haircut about every other month. I've gone to some of the expensive places and paid tons more and I've never been able to get a cut that I like so I finally found someone I like that's close to me! And she's inexpensive. I do my own coloring because I like how it looks better. I use Feria so it costs about $10 every 3 or 4 months.

I get my haircuts free with a $5 tip and color cost $5 as well. Before you go crazy I am a hairstylist and we do each others hair.

We charge $10.95 for a haircut and shampoo.$15.95 for cut and style. All over color is $36.95 more for longer hair.Highlights-just the top $25,top and sides $35 and full head $50.I personally think it is not enough but I'm not the boss we live in a smaller town with cheap people. Some people don't even know that a tip appriciated especially since I usually only make $6 an hour.I work because I love it not because I have to,thank heavens.I would be broke. Some people I would do their hair for free and have if they are having a rough time.Anyway, good for you who tip.You are great.

I could have written this exactly! Well, except I go 4 times a year or so. :) My hairdresser is a wonderful French woman, who is about 70 years old now - so who knows how long she'll still be working. She's at the Hair Cuttery at the mall, and I go out of my way a little to see her (she's like 30 or 40 miles away, but I go to Disney or do volunteer work on those days also).

I like Feria as well.

I was paying $100 with tip for cut and color but the budget cannot support that anymore. I went to Sally Beauty, got the Sally card and spent $13 on color, processor, the cup, brush, and gloves and my best friend colors it for me. Sometimes I feed her dinner and sometimes just a beer :rotfl: That $13 will last months since I only color every 5 weeks and it's a lot of stuff! I am growing it out so she sometimes trims my bangs too, but that's about it. So, I guess I spend close to nothing now!

I just paid $90 for a cut, color, and highlight and that included tip. It's kinda pricey for my town, but I've paid twice that in Atlanta. I couldn't do that very often! Yikes!

I had been paying $100 + tip for a cut and color, but about two years ago decided no more of that. One of my employees attended beauty school and cut hair for a salon for several years before she went back to college to get her BA and came to work for me. She does hair on the side and only charges $10 for a cut! She also will do a foil and cut for $45 total. So, I switched to her, and then recently decided (because I am starting to get a few more gray hairs) that I didn't want to deal with foiling anymore. So, I switched to a semi-permanent color which I do at home every 4-6 weeks. My wonderful employee gets my Matrix color gloss at Aerial for me and it is cheap, cheap, cheap!

I just got back from the salon and paid $65 for a partial highlight. I think she charges around $90 for a full and about $40 for a haircut. One way I've found to save when I go to the salon is not get it styled at the end, just blown dry enough to see the color that came out. It usually saves about $10. I love the place I go now...I used to go to these expensive salons like the Elizabeth Arden Red Doors and would easily pay double. I think my hair looks better now at half the price!

My last cut was $24.99, and that was at Mastercuts. She did a nice job. I've had pretty good luck there, but I'd like to start seeing the same stylist all of the time.

If anyone knows of a reasonable, non-pretentious hairstylist north of Boston, let me know. :)

I need the same thing, only West of Boston or in Downtown Boston. Tried most of the Newbury Street salons - what expensive disappointments!
