Oh boy, what do I miss..... I miss the immersion of the older attractions. The new ones seem to be more of a slam-bam moment...thrills over substance. I miss the music of the older attractions...and the older music of some of the current ones.
In MK, I miss Mr. Toad. The Pooh ride is nice, in a not very involving way. The Skyway ...it was magical to plan to be on the skyway during the fireworks show. The Main Street Electical Parade and Baroque Hoedown. Even the 20K League ride...I didn't like it, but it was a quiet moment for me since the rest of the family went!
Epcot is probably the park I get most nostalgic for. Horizons and the smell of the oranges...choosing your own ending (my kids fought over which one got to choose). I've ridden Mission Space twice and agree that it's a technological marvel, but again, it's a sensory overload experience rather than an immersive one. World of Motion versus Test Track. Same comment. Imagination...well, at least this one is better than the original replacement. Neither come close to the original. One of my fondest memories is of my kids playing with Figment and Dreamfinder outside the attraction. The original music from Spaceship Earth...Tomorrows child. Wistful, sort of ethereal and just right for the space. The preshow before this one for HISTA...the music was fantastic....True Colors...I've tried to find it online, but only found the Phil Collins version which I don't like. Even the original music for Universe of Energy was memorable.
At AK, most of the changes have been acceptable, if not memorable. The new area around Dinosaur is a little cheesy, but must admit Tricerotops Spin is not bad for what it is. Just not the originality that I'd come to expect from WDW.
At the Studios, most of the changes have been positive. With the Hollywood theme thrill rides seem more acceptable here, and the ones that have been done have been well executed and well themed. I do miss watching shows in progress during the backstage tour. Also miss the Bette Midler portion (but not the bee blue screen)!
Having said all that, I still feel that a day at Disney beats a day almost anywhere else, hands down! For the last several years my son was in school in Tampa, so I managed 3-4 trips a year (to see him of course!). Now he's home, and my husband told me I can still go at least once a year! He figures that if I had to have a mid-life crisis, going to Disney beats the other alternatives!
