hi all! our bid was accepted for 200 shares at SSR and the contracted has been submitted to disney already (fingers crossed on the ROFR thing!)

we told our guide that we're going the resale route and needless to say he was not happy. he sent us the following email:

John
Remember when you purchase through DVC …..Disney backs this purchase.
We cannot guarantee what you are buying when you buy resale. That is the risk you take.
One other cost you did not factor in was me…. and I am worth a heck of a lot more than $5000.00!
You see how I have fought for your business?
That is how passionate I am about DVC and how important my members are to me.
If you need advice on places to go, happenings at the parks, or if you run into issues I am there just like I am now to make sure that you always have the Disney Experience.
Some things you just can’t put a price on.
Whatever your decision …..I wish You, Nancy and Thomas well.

i mean, is a guide really worth more than $5000??? can't i get the same info by calling member services? i thought that someone who buys resale gets the same exact privileges as someone who buys through disney??

also, won't i get great advice on places to go, etc by doing my own research and DISing?? i've already gotten great info by being on here (like saving money through resale!).

we are going through TSS and i feel very comfortable that we will get what we pay for. they have been in business since 1994 and are sponsors of quite a few disney boards!

is there something i'm really not going to get by buying resale?

also, when we finalize the purchase, will i be able to receive an ID and registration number for dvcmember.com? i'm sure i can just ask, right?

thanks everyone!! we are so excited for our SSR ownership!

No, he's not worth $5,000. The advantages to buying direct is you get to make reservations immediately, don't have to worry about ROFR. You usually get points from the use year before, but you may also get that with a resale. Plus you get a $30 tote bag. Once the resale is closed, there is no difference, you get the same services.

that's what i thought! and actually, we are getting 198 of the 200 points from the resale from last year! so we are pretty much getting the incentive!

We have bought all of our contracts thru resale. The only major difference I see is all of the money still sitting in my bank account that I didn't have to pay to Disney to buy direct. We are very pleased with the resale process, and have had no issues come up with 3 contracts so far.

I'm kind of surprised by the statement "Remember when you purchase through DVC …..Disney backs this purchase.

When you buy resale, you go through a title company and have title insurance. Seems awfully safe to me.

2 years ago, when I bought my first DVC contract via resale, my guide was very nice and thanked me for the opportunity to serve me. On a recent trip to WDW I got a voice mail in my room from my guide welcoming me back to WDW and asking me if I am considering any add-on's, to please give him an opportunity for the sale. He was quite nice about it.

I have 3 contracts directly through Disney and purchased the 4th contract via resale. While it is true you don't have the points in your account immediately, you do have the money saved in your bank. I wouldn't hesitate to buy via resale again. Hope this helps.

lol! i like that difference!

i thought that was weird too. didn't make sense. then again, maybe he didn't realize i was going through the TSS?

as far as what a guide would do after you buy, can't you get the same service through member services? i mean, so i don't have a guide, so what?...right?

Wow ... the way I read it, (name of Guide edited out by Moderator) message is, "GUILT ... the Disney Experience."

Not part of the experience I want, thank you.

It does sound a bit bizarre to me also. We purchased both Resale and Add-on Resale. Our guide has been gracious, cordial, and supportive.

You will still have a guide even if you purchase resale. I believe you will still have the same guide you were originally in contact with. so, you will still get his "time".
I bought resale and just did a direct add-on (only 50 points, so the closing costs on a resale killed it for me). I dealt with my guide who was amazing to deal with.

ugh, so we'll still be stuck with (name of Guide edited out by moderator)? he seemed so nice at first but his emails just got more and more pushy. and, well, i don't want him! i want someone else!

That guide has to be kidding, right?

We have three contracts, two through Disney and one resale. We will always compare the price between the resale and direct and select the one that gets us the best deal. We explained this to our guide on our last purchase of 100 AKV points. He understood why we chose to go resale. If it saves you hundreds of dollars or more it's worth doing resale.

Last summer Disney was offering pretty good incentives so that it was often better to go direct. Or the difference was so small (less than $50) that it wasn't worth the stress to buy resale and go through ROFR.

It sounds like you made a wise decision. Good luck with ROFR and I hope to welcome you home soon.

I bought my first DVC resale. I had been in touch with my guide beforehand as a referal from a friend of mine but we just couldn't make the huge initial buy in committment. So we found a nice small contract resale and bought it. When they had the DVC tour in Boston I bought some BLT points and my guide was the same one I initially talked with and she was awesome and so nice. When we had our first visit as members I also had a message from our guide just welcoming us home and letting us know if we had any questions to call her. It makes a big difference when you have a nice guide who is not pushy. If you are extremely uncomfortable with your guide, you could try request a new one, don't know how hard it would be to get one. Although the only time you would speak with him again is if you were to add on, you've heard of addonitis right? ; ) I'm sending lots of pixie dust for you to pass ROFR and hopefully we'll all be welcoming you home soon!

thanks! i'm really stressing myself now with this ROFR stuff! i hope i hope i hope it works out!

it was really weird getting that email. made me feel uncomfortable and i almost cringe every time i read it. $5000 for a guide?? does he think we are stupid?

If your contract passes ROFR (pixiedust: that it does!), then you may not still be assigned this guide.

I had contacted DVC 6 months prior to purchasing a resale contract. The guide I talked to at the time was Cindy. When I bought my resale contract and closed, I decided to add on to BLT within days. I called the main number and told them I was a new member, didn't have a number even yet, and they looked me up. The guide they put me through to was not Cindy but Bill.

So, you may end up with the guide attached to the contract you are buying. I agree, someone this pushy is not who I would want to deal with either. Mine has never, ever, made me feel uncomfortable with the decisions. I was planning to add on in January and needed to postpone since my DD is still choosing her college. My guide was gracious and simply said to just give him a call when and if I want to push it through.

Good luck!!!

I purchased my two contracts through resale.
I believe after my first contract, I received something in the mail from DVC saying XXX was my guide. So, you will really have a guide to call if you really want to after you purchase resale too.
In total I have purchased 420 points resale for SSR. First was $70 for 300 points and the second was $69 for 120 points. I saved significantly paying resale. The only thing missing was my tote bag LOL and I can purchase one myself with my savings on ebay if I really needed one ;)

Congratulations!

Is he worth $5,000, of course. Is he worth giving away $5,000??? The way I look at it is this way:

Would I give $5,000 to my Mom? - OF course
Would I give/loan $5,000 to a great friend who is really in dire need - If I had the money, yes.
Would I give $5,000 to my mailman who faithfully delivers my mail in rain, sleet, or snow, - Umm, NO, that's his job (although I do leave a gift for Christmas).
Would I give $5,000 to a salesman who gets paid to sell me a Disney contract which I can get cheaper in resale, NO WAY.

I believe it is unethical for him to write you the letter the way he did. The resale process includes a title search which ensures that everything is legit. As for assisting you with advice, tell him you will rely on the DIS boards to help me plan your upcoming stay.

exactly!

dont sweat it dumbo, you have learned disney's best kept secret - DVC at 40% off buying resale!

TSS (and the other two or three resellers) are totally reputable.

I agree with everyone here. We bought from Disney, and the only communication I have with our guide is via mailers from DVC with his name on the bottom. In fact when we took the BLT tour in July, we added on and a different guide (on duty at the time) took the order and filed the paperwork. Never even got a message from our original guide.

The point I'm trying to make is that DVD guides only help with adding points. Everything else you get through member services, the DVC website, and these boards!

Good luck on ROFR, SSR is worth it to us at $95/point!
