My parents were members at OKW in 1994- great childhood memories there.
What do yall miss about the DVC experience from the 1990s?

wasn't a member then, but watching some of the original videos it appears exchanges out of disney were initially more emphasized and more affordable and had some really incredible options like the Mackinac Hotel and Woodstock Inn...

I also dislike the idea that DVC has become essentially Disney's accounting trick for financing the hotels and would have preferred it more resemble the traditional timeshare with big rooms...

We bought in 1992. That was an unbelievable perk! I believe it ran for seven years, but I could be wrong.
Yes, through 1999. Unbelievable perk, but also a great sales item!

What I might miss most about 90s DVC (we bought 93) is it truly was a relaxed and absolutely no pressure sales experience. The DVC approach today is different - not as pressure-filled as many other timeshare sales people, but much more than it used to be. Our first visit and review was relaxed, a nice experience, and ended with free ice cream sundaes at the ice cream bar they had at OKW (called Disney Vacation Club then!)......!!

Yes, child care during our visit, a family photo (see my avatar), and ice cream at the end!! It was the best timeshare sales presentation we've ever been to.

We remember the ice cream bar at The Commodore House, as it was called. I think it was the sales center. We always say that it should have been turned into an excellent quick service area!

I miss the ability to plan on shorter notice. And as someone stated above, I wish DVC had stuck with more of the OKW-style resorts rather than hotels. Very glad we bought what we did, when we did!

Did the "Welcome Home" tagline originate when OKW was first opened? If it did it makes more sense there seeing as the rooms were so big they do seem like a place you could live and not just be on vacation.

Being a kid at OKW!

-The kids club was so much fun (I think it was called D2K?). I remember how there were a ton of activities, we used to go on field trips including Fantasia mini golf at night, they would move the arcade games into the community hall and set them to free, the foosball competitions, letting us loose on the tennis court, chasing counselors around the pool...
-Even outside of the kids club, there were more activities for kids. I fondly remember the "Unbirthday Partiess" they used to host at the Community Hall.
-You used to see the same cast members trip after trip and would really get to know them, particularly the Community Hall staff. Particularly have fond memories of Mary Ann, Stacy, Enrique and (I'm embarrassed to admit I've now forgotten his name, but I can see his face so clearly...) a fourth person that last I saw him he'd transferred over to Sartoga Springs as head of their Community center...
-They used to have more events at the resort too. I remember the animal keepers bringing animals over from Discovery Island and showing them off to people in the bleachers over where they now do the s'more.

As far as being an adult there, yes I miss the days I could book a week long stay in a studio at OKW with only a month's advance planning without needing to piece it together.

I think it was originally "Own A Piece of the Magic" but the welcome home sentiment was there.

I miss that we didn't get to experience it. I remember in 1991, we made an appointment in the MK to go over to the "new" DVC, but then we decided we weren't really interested and cancelled the appointment. Ten years later we reconsidered and joined-but too late for free park tickets.

Sounds like lots of great perks have come and gone. Along with higher prices to boot!
