what do you feed your dogs

If you have a dog/puppy what do you feed them? Does anyone feed Chicken Soup for the dog lover's soul brand? I would love to hear any reviews/feedback you have on your experience with this brand. Thanks!

We have fed them IAMS ever since they were puppies. Usually they get the hard food but sometimes as a treat they get the canned food.

My puppy is 4 1/2 months old and I did a lot of research when we got her and I am feeding the Chicken Soup food. It is pretty highly rated but not as expensive as some of the other top brands. She loves it. She has a great coat and is growing well. I also switched my cats over to the Chicken Soup from Iams after seeing that the Iams was full of corn.

that is a great dog food. my mom uses it on her blue heeler, he has skin allergies, and they have cleared up on that food. He also doesn't mind eating it either.

Definitely feed dry food, it cleans their teeth and will probably save a lot in veterinary dental bills later on. We always reccommend feeding food that the first ingredient is a meat, not a meat by-product, meat meal, or corn. Dogs, like people, don't digest that filler stuff.

I feed my Scottie Blue Buffalo Organic Chicken and Brown Rice. She does well on this food.

I feed my puppy (13.5 week old German Shepherd) Eagle Pack Holistic puppy food for large breeds. That is what our breeder fed him & he is doing well on it. His coat is beautiful and, most importantly, his poop is firm & formed.

I checked it out on dogfoodanalysis dotcom and it was rated well. There are others that were rated higher but the protein content is too high for puppies.

His food is really expensive (about $48 for a 30lb bag).

I feed my pup Kirkland Puppy from Costco. It's very affordable and rated pretty highly. I used to feed her Orijen but she had very loose stools and as a student, I couldn't afford to keep her on it. She has done very well on the Kirkland brand and I plan on keeping her on it when we switch to adult.

My dogs are currently eating Acana Grasslands (the poultry variety for my female GSD who eats EVERYTHING) and Acana Pacifica (the salmon variety for my male GSD who is allergic to EVERYTHING) dry food. Acana is made by the same people who make Orijen, but it's a bit lower protein (33%) than Orijen. Acana is grain-free just like Orijen, with the same high-quality ingredients from Alberta, Canada. No fillers, no hormones or antibiotics, and no harmful preservatives. We pay $52 for a 30 lb bag of the poultry type, and $56 for a bag of the salmon type. It's expensive, but I WILL NOT feed my dogs kibble with grain in it. I will throw some leftover rice or oatmeal into their bowls every once and awhile, but I do not believe that grains should make up the bulk of a carnivore's diet.

We have also fed our male GSD EVO, and I really liked it. But he started having allergy problems with poultry and beef, so we switched to Acana. I also like that Acana has gloucosamine (a joint supplement) in it, as big dogs can have such joint problems. I LOVE Orijen, but we just can't afford $73 for a 30 lb bag for the fish formula.

Our female was fed "crap" - Purina and IAMS - for the first five years before we adopted her. She was very overweight (and still is, but it's getting better!) and I'm worried about the long-term effects of 5 years of eating food laced with ethoxyquin, a preservative that is a known carcinogen, but that is still used in low-quality dog foods.

We also feed our dogs the Chicken Soup brand dog food and they really seem to love it. It also seems like it's done well for them.

We did try Avoderm right before this, but one of our dogs started scratching a lot. We read about some dogs having an allergic reaction to avocado, so we switched from that food and the scratching stopped.

The only thing about the Chicken Soup food is that large chains don't carry it, so hopefully there's a small pet store near you that does.

Yellow Lab, started her on Chicken Soup from my research on dog food. The dog forums would make you think you were an animal abuser if you fed a dog any less. Chicken Soup was the cheapest of the good stuff.

The results were, constant diarrhea, itchy skin, and poor coat. We tried some other expensive "good" food, same thing. We switched to Iams, which is highly recommended against on the dog forums, and she did fantastic. Been feeding her Iams for 2 years.

Mother-in-law had the same experience with her 2 Golden Retrievers.

That sounds like a protein allergy - do you know what the protein source is in the IAMS that you're using, just out of curiosity? That's similar to what we were getting with our male German Shepherd on EVO (poultry formula) but as soon as we switched to a fish formula, the problems cleared right up.

I'm glad you found something that works for you - though, personally, I'd be leery to feed anything that contains a preservative that has been banned from human food.

When our boxer was with us, we only fed him EVO. My dh researched all kinds of food due our dogs stomach problems. After his research he refuses to feed our yorkie, anything Iams, Purina etc. Well our yorkie started having a build up of protein so we switched him to Chicken soup

I used to feed my dogs proplan $40 a bag. They started scratching and losing fur. I did some research and switched to chicken soup. Within weeks the scratching stopped and after a month their hair was back. I reccomend this food to everyone I know !!

I've heard that the smaller breeds can have problems with high protein foods. EVO is the highest that I've seen, at 42%, and it's even a bit too high for one of my German Shepherds! Just goes to show that even the really good foods don't work for every dog - you need to try different foods to find the perfect one!
