What do you eat on X-mas eve?

My mother in law cooks Shrimp in some pasta, I am another who dislikes fish of pretty much any sort so I usually eat chicken nuggests which she cookes for our kids...

My family used to do the traditional 7 fishes but hasn't in years as we don't get together on Christmas Eve.

I cook a Tourtiere Meat Pie which is a tradition from the French side of my family. Plus it's yummy with some wine and cheese soup.

We eat at the same Thai resturant every year on Christmas Eve after church. My whole family which is around 20 of us... it's fun!

We often have raviolis- a little package themselves.

Sometimes we would go to friends of my grandparents who made 100s of tamales...same idea- a little edible package. :sunny:

Like others have posted we do an appetizer type buffet which includes:

BBQ Meatballs, Lil smokies, Potato Salad, Cold Cuts (ham, roast beef, turkey), Cheese (Swiss, Cheddar, Lorraine), Rolls, Shrimp Cocktail, Pickles, Olives, carrrots, 4 varieties of Jello salad that no one ever touches(except grandma and great unlce!), herring, and cranberries.

Oh and to answer the question, we are going to have our big dinner Christmas eve, DH will smoke a turkeya nd I'll probably make a ham and broccoli casserole and whatever else, those are the important things, haha. A few desserts, etc.

Then Christmas morning I"ll make some sort of breakfast casserole and I'm thinking maybe fondue christmas night. It will be good with all the christmas cookies, etc.

Recipe pls for the ham and broc casserole..

We have homemade pizza. Not sure why, we just do! In the past we have had salad to go with it, but this year I am thinking of doing cut up vegies and dip. We also have birthday cake for Jesus.

Loving the appetizer buffet idea and it would probably be easier to do since DH is away at church for like 5 hours on Christmas eve. Hmmm, I am going to have to give that some thought.

MIL always serves oyster stew as well as chilli since none of her kids would ever eat the oyster stew.

We've had a lot of different things over the years on Christmas Eve. I've always wanted to have a traditional food that we could have every year, but DH would go all out for the Christmas Eve feast and develop the menu on his own. He had so much fun, I didn't want to discourage him at all. However, last year I think the work involved finally got to him. Between that and a very busy work schedule, he's agreed to let me take over Christmas Eve dinner.

We lived next to this wonderful Italian family for a few years when I was a child. They would always invite us to their Christmas Eve feast. I have such pleasant memories of those parties that I'm going to try to incorporate seafood as part of our tradition. I'm going to make a seafood lasagna with a four cheese sauce instead of a marinara. I'll use shrimp, scallops, and crab, the garlic/cheese sauce, broccoli, and roasted red pepper. I hope it goes over well. It should be yummy, and fairly easy in that I can totally prep it earlier in the day and just pop it in the oven closer to dinner time.

I'm getting some great ideas from this post. This year it's my turn to cook on Christmas Eve. I was thinking of making homemade baked ziti with garlic bread and having antipasto salad. We also order cannoli's from the Italian bakery by our house.

Christmas Day is always a Honeybaked Ham, baked beans, chessy potatoes, salad, and cheesecakes. Oh, and all kinds of fattening appetizers both nights.

I really like the soup and breadbowl idea. I may think about doing something like that.

If you want some recipes for incredibly yummy soups, let me know. I've got some wonderful ones.

We usually have something Italian. This year I'm making stuffed shells with meat sauce. yum! I'm a would-be Italian at heart!

We've been doing the same Christmas Eve food and "rounds" for as long as I can remember. We start w/ my mom's family on Christmas Eve for and that usually includes Pizza and Wings. Then we go to my dad's family gathering and that is all snack foods. Then to Midnight Mass.

On Christmas Day I go to my Inlaws and they have Lasanga.

We do a Christmas get together the last Saturday before the holiday (this year the 17th which seems so early) w/ just my parents, siblings, and neices/nephews. That is always Roast Beef on Hardrolls and Salads.

Normally I make a standing rib roast.. but this year I have scheduled a christmas carriage ride through Highland Park. It is at 8:15 so we are either going to have to eat early... or have something simple Christmas eve and then I will do the standing rib roast christmas day. I am kinda leaning toward the something easy thing. ;)

On holidays, I eat anything that won't eat me first...and even then, I might try anyway. :rotfl2:

We have an unusual array of items...everyone brings whatever. My sister and I both make potica (mine is better... no contest, actually :teeth: ). My aunt and uncle supply the ham. Various family members bring rigatoni, spinach dip, pies, cookies, cheesy mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, LOTS OF YUMMIES!

Now St Patricks Day, we REALLY eat. :rotfl:

We do a big pot of Chili and a big pot of Vegetable Soup along with snack foods and Christmas Cookies. It's serve yourself all night as we're running in and out to different church services.

nothing special. we eat whatever.

Our family is Italian and my mom makes this huge dinner with all kinds of fish. Calamari, Flounder, Shrimp, lobster etc etc.
Well since I don't eat fish (never even tried it - just don't like the smell of it so I assume I won't like it hehe) I go to Mcdonalds and get dinner and bring it home or I buy myself a frozen pizza and that's what I eat. My family thinks I'm crazy or not Italian...one or the other. :confused3 :teeth:

What do you eat or cook on x-mas eve?

whatever they serve on the cruise. We are making a tradition of going on a cruise every Christmas.

I'm cooking this year...not sure yet what menu is.
