Our family is Italian and my mom makes this huge dinner with all kinds of fish. Calamari, Flounder, Shrimp, lobster etc etc.
Well since I don't eat fish (never even tried it - just don't like the smell of it so I assume I won't like it hehe) I go to Mcdonalds and get dinner and bring it home or I buy myself a frozen pizza and that's what I eat. My family thinks I'm crazy or not Italian...one or the other. :confused3 :teeth:

What do you eat or cook on x-mas eve?

Can't relate - I love fish. But that's very considerate of you not to ask your family to cook you something special.

I think for us the official dish is ham, but I eat everything I can get my hands on. Christmas = overeating for me and I LIKE it that way.

It's funny to read in these magazines articles like "eating lite during the holidays." I just :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

We have never really had any particular meal in my house.... too busy that night ;) But maybe when I have a family I will start.I love the idea of just having a cocktail and dessert party.... I am always too stuffed by the time we get to dessert... this way it all taken care of :goodvibes

Christmas Eve we have snack foods...shrimp, dips, sweets, veggie tray

It is usually an all evening graze since we snack before and after midnight church service.

We're Italian too and do the "Seven Fishes" although we never seem to have 7 since there aren't enough that we all like! We usually have fried flounder, lasagna or stuffed shells, linguini in clam sauce or shrimp in aglio olio sauce, hot and cold antipasto, stuffed artichokes, whew! Then sometimes after midnight mass we come back and eat sausage and peppers (although I never do because I'd get sick!) Christmas Eve meal is more of a big deal than Christmas Day.

Christmas Eve we go all out: shrimp cocktail for an appetizer and then spiral ham with all the fixins for dinner. :cool1:

Depends on if the little woman opens up her lingerie present on Christmas eve or Christmas day... :teeth:

We don't have a set menu year-to-year. This year we are having loin of lamb and lobster tail.

We vary our menu each year, depending on what we're in the mood for. Last year, I made Emeril's lobster stuffed tenderloin. :) :)

I grew up Sicilian and we never did the seven fishes (I've heard of it, but it wasn't tradition for us). Maybe it's an Italian thing, not a Sicilian thing? :confused3

Growing up - it was a big meal Chirstmas Eve (ham and/or turkey)...and Christmas Day we'd "graze" (after a big breakfast)

Now...we go between my parents house, DH's parents, and his grandparents. We eat at least 2 "big" meals and a full breakfast.

then we roll on home with leftovers on christmas day and graze. heheheh

Growing up we always went to my grandmothers and then my moms for X-mas Eve. But since we're moving again soon we decided to stay down here for the holidays.

Not sure what we're going to do but I'm excited to start some new traditions of our own and I'm loving Christmas in Florida! :teeth:

We never had a tradition until about 10 years ago. The entire family went to Christmas Eve mass and on the way home, Joe and I spotted an all-you-can-fit-in-your-body Chinese buffet. I called the car behind us, they called the one behind them, and then the next car. The entire clan, Mom & Dad, us, bro's and their wives and children, ended up at this joint and had the place to ourselves.

The food was mediocre, but we had such a great time, we do it every year now. We try to live out the scene in Christmas Story with Mom (she's asian) leading the family in fa-ra-ra-ra-ra...

We do the Italian seafood thing. This year we doing scampi, clams, calamari, crab cakes. We never have seven either because we can't all agree on seven seafoods everyone likes.

AHH yes the fishes....My DH mom always cooked those...My dh only liked filet so she made that for him and I do not eat any fish...so I got spagetti with butter (the spagetti was cooked to go with loster tails so I got a bit before the sauce was added)

My family was usually putting up our tree on christmas eve..so we had
hors' dourves and some ham...

The 7 fishes became a huge problem for my DH and i when my MIL decided to not cook anymore.....His sisters insisted that they had to have the same menu....I had no desire to cook that since we don't even eat it....

one year when I had everyone over ...we had ham, ziti, crab legs(a nod to the fishes for our guests) my sil said it was her worst christmas eve ever... and she really meant that because the menu was different :earseek:
since when is what you serve more important than who you are with?? and that is only one of many stories.....

so now we stay home with our 3 kids ....food is not set...I decide the week before...but we read the bible story of the birth Of Christ as we place the figures in our nativity scene and sing carols( Little drummer boy is lots of fun since my DS began taking drum lessons at school !! LOL)

Oh and if we don't see his family on christmas eve..thats it..they only get together that night.....(unless i plan a party) Can you spell dysfunctional?

:grouphug: :grouphug: for being the one who does not like the fishes....I hope you have an easier time that we have had....

Chinese food on Christmas Eve, and a big Italian meal (no fish) on Christmas day.

That's so funny because last year, DH said we were goign to a movie and dinner christmas night. Okay hunny, but make sure you call and find somewhere open or we'll end up eating chinese like on A Christmas Story. Well, come Christmas day, he never called and said, oh there will be plenty of places open. Nope, we had our choice of chinese and hooters. Hooters won. So yeah, me, DH and DS4 had hooters for christmas dinner last year, and for the record, there will NOT be a repeat this year.

What is X-Mas? We celebrate Christmas!

I knew someone was going to post this. X is the Hebrew? form of Christ so it is a VERY acceptable abbreviation for Christmas, get over it.

We have appetizer type food for X-Mas eve usually chicken wings, meat balls, cheese tray, etc.

Oh and to answer the question, we are going to have our big dinner Christmas eve, DH will smoke a turkeya nd I'll probably make a ham and broccoli casserole and whatever else, those are the important things, haha. A few desserts, etc.

Then Christmas morning I"ll make some sort of breakfast casserole and I'm thinking maybe fondue christmas night. It will be good with all the christmas cookies, etc.

I never knew that. For some reason, I thought the the X in X-mas meant like drawing an "X" Criss cross. Hmm, very interesting

back on topic - my Sicilian makes her killer Lasagna (no meat in in BTW) with sausage and meatballs on the side. Can't wait!
