What do you eat on Fridays during lent? We're not big fish people and I need some ideas. Thanks!

Pasta with alfredo sauce, mac n cheese, pancakes and eggs, bean burritos, veggies and rice, and eggplant parmesean.... how's that? We like fish so it ranges from the famous salmon patties to tilapia with salsa.

For dinners we alternate pizza, pasta, grilled cheese, breakfast (eggs, french toast, pancakes), salad. Stuff like that.

I made chicken taco soup in the crockpot today and I bet it would be really good without the chicken....my kids don't really eat the chicken anyway. I also make broccoli and macaroni at least once a week....just saute some garlic in some olive oil add the broccoli and chicken broth and pour over pasta. I also make pasta fagiole once in a while.

I am making potato soup in the crockpot today. we will have grilled cheese and salad with it tonight

I thought it was a law that you had to eat grilled cheese and tomato soup on Friday during lent :lmao:

Really, we eat home made mac n cheese, cheese pizza, spaghetti without any meat in the sauce, other pastas, vege stir fry.

I am curious as to why fish is allowed and chicken is not? Is it all meats because Fish is a meat....or is it just red meat because then you could eat chicken and pork too? And how come if St. Pattys day falls on a Friday they "bend" that rule so you can have corned beef?

Fish have fins, meats have legs. No legs on Fridays.

My parents have: homemade macaroni and cheese, pancakes (ick) and fish, although you've made it clear you don't like fish much. How about canned tuna? Some folks who don't like fish, still like canned tuna. They also have tuna noodle casserole (triple ick) and g-dhelpus, creamed tuna on toast (now that is totally VILE)!

But you did ask. ;)

The idea was that having meat was a luxury back in the day and fish was not, therefore it was supposed to make you think of the sacrifice that was made.

As for the dispensation for eating meat on St. Patrick's Day, that is only made on a case by case basis and isn't a general dispensation. I know our Bishop did NOT allow the dispensation last time we had a Friday St. Pat's Day.

The priest at our old church put the whole meat/fish thing in perspective--if you give up eating meat but go out for a lobster dinner, is that really a sacrifice? If you don't generally eat meat and "give it up" is it really a sacrifice? He suggested that people give up something that is HARD to give up-like eating candy or drinking pop-it makes you think about what you are doing a lot more then going out for lobster.

Pinto beans, fried potatoes and cornbread
Red beans and rice and veggie platter
Breakfast
Cheese/veggie quesdillas

grilled/baked portabella mushrooms
black bean chili mac with elbow macaroni and veggies

:rotfl:

In New York I think the law is pizza on Fridays. :)

:thumbsup2 though I'm not sure if the pizza delivery guy will make it here tonight with all this snow. Might have to just do soup & sandwiches.

We do baked potatoes as a meal and load them with cheese and broccoli. We are having periogies tonight...yum!
Bakes ziti, stuffed shells, lentils, sometimes I made veggies and serve them on a plate of rice. You can do an appetizer dinner, like mozzerella sticks, potatoe skind, nachos and cheese, quesadillas, spinach and artichoke dip. We also do breakfast for dinner, sometimes to make it a little different we make crepes.

Spaghetti with just tomoato sauce (or perhaps some mushrooms thrown in)....blueberry pancakes, scrambled eggs, french toast, PB&J, soup, grilled cheese or even spaghetti-o's if we are in a hurry for some reason.
