What do you eat before a full?

I probably go against the conventional wisdom with this, but when I have to do an early morning training run I don't eat a solid breakfast, I only drink my GenUCAN around 30 minutes before going out, and then if it's a long enough run I'll also bring fuel on the run. I frequently do shorter training runs (for me, 1:15 or less) completely fasted.

I know the breakfast thing works for me because when I start my runs later and/or get up earlier for a race, I do eat that breakfast 2-3 hours beforehand - it's as much to stop the inevitable stomach growling and fuel whatever activities I'm doing during that 2-3 hours than the run itself. But I've done plenty of long runs (and bike rides) without it.

I am with you as well with no breakfast, most all of my runs are before 5am. Shorter runs are just some liquids before heading out, longer runs either 1/2 yogurt or 1/2 banana and taking a gel midrun.

Will do a little more on race morning because of the extra time before the start: a full yogurt, banana, and sip on gatorade leading up.

We did pretty well in Dayton with those sport beans...those really help! Jolly Ranchers work good too. I like a banana and oatmeal before...

An old school ultra runners breakfast is a can of white potatoes... I have tried them while cycling but do not think of them except when a topic like this comes up.

Not a bad choice..

160 Kcal with a good sodium and potassium load.

Medoc Trail marathon has those canned potatoes in their aid stations. I think they have a way of salting them too. They also had mountain dew in addition to typical aid station beverages.

For most of my early morning training runs I just eat a heavily caffeinated GU 15 or 20 minutes before hand. At Disney I'm usually up a couple of hours before the race so I typically wind up eating a small granola bar too.
