Sorry for the odd question.. but we bought four fish at Walmart (not sure what they are-- some sort of little gray fish).. anyhow.. about three weeks ago all but three died. Yesterday we discovered that there were baby fish in there-- at least five.

Will the big fish eat the little ones?!?!? We got three out with our net.. I think there are at least two left-- what should we do?

I stuck the three in a jar with a little food.. not sure if they will survive either living without a filter?

I am clueless about fish- thanks for your advice!

Hi, The bigger fish generally eat the babies. You can actually get a "nursery" at most local pet stores that fits inside the tank...

Some times they will hide in floating plants in the tank as well...

Hope this helps!

ETA: yes, they will probably need a filter...

I think it depends on the kind of fish whether they will eat the babies or not.

Judging by the sheer numbers of guppies that live in my tank, guppies do not eat their own young:rotfl2:

I just leave mine in the tank and let them fend for themselves;)

So far they've been doing a pretty job of it.

:fish: :fish: :fish:

Maybe you can figure out what kind of fish you have and check it out online.

go and buy a nursery/breeder. They are really cheap (like $5) at most stores. It hangs in the top of the regular tank and gets all the same water as the regular fish..

I go buy a nice gift and take it up to the hospital...or for the last few babies it's been me in the hospital....then welcome the new little one to the family.

Sorry, my last name is Fish and it's late enough that I had to read your title a couple of times before comprehension sunk in.

I just wanted to thank you all for your advice.. I ended up catching three of the five baby fish that were left. I put them in a separate jar and so far they are living-- I think they have tripled in size. I am not sure if the other two have been sucked up by the filter, or eaten by their Mom-- but they are missing...

thanks again-
jen
