Be patient and change eating/exercise habits slowly was the best advice I got in this regard.
Replace an unhealthy snack with a healthier one. Not saying you can never again have the unhealthy ones. Just regard them as an occasional treat rather than something you eat often.
I changed a few things each week or two. For instance, used half my preferred amount of sugar in coffee and tea, then gradually cut that to none. Now, I don't miss it. In fact, a lot of sugary drinks or foods taste awful to me now. That's something, since I used to be a sugar addict.
What really made a difference for me, too, was no longer drinking any kind of soda. Eliminating that took me 2-3 years, which is why I said be patient. But, I feel dramatically better not drinking that stuff. It's been 7-8 years since I last had a Coke, and it tasted hideous. If I want something soda-like, I add a couple ounces of fruit juice to sparkling water.
Another helpful trick for me was buying a small bowl that held about a cup of food, one I could hold comfortably in one hand. It felt like more effort to hold the bowl as I ate than shovel food into my mouth from a dish on the table. I was more aware of how much I was eating, because I could refill the bowl only if I truly still felt hungry for more. I ate slower and more thoughtfully as a result.
All that said, it took me 10 years to lose the 20 pounds I wanted off, but I did it and have kept it off.
