You think your friend's child might have Aspergers?
I'm very uncomfortable even asking this. It's just that there have been some issues with a friend's (DF1) son (age 4, almost 5) that have just really come to the forefront in the last couple of months. And, it's not just me. DH first mentioned it to me on Monday and when I mentioned it to a mutual friend (DF2), she said that she had been thinking the same thing. So, last night, I started looking things up. He doesn't have the huge red flags, but he exhibits many of the signs that I read about on the Autism site and here on the DIS as well. Turns out, DH and DF2 also did some internet research last night. It looks like we're all on the same page as far as what we think. So, where do we go from here?
Here's where it gets even more complicated. DF1's parent was a principal at a special needs school and had recently id'd autism in one DF1's friends sons. Yet, she hasn't recognized some of the behaviour issues in her grandson.
I really love this little boy and I love my friend. Because of some recent issues with DF1's son and DF2's kids, this would be a hard subject to tackle with DF1. I think that DF1 might know something is up with her boy, but that doesn't mean she'd be okay if I said something...
At this point, I just want to know how to interact with the boy. What can I do that might make things easier for me with him. Both DF2 and I realized that we both have the same trepidation of approaching him because we just don't know what we'll get. It's very hot and cold with him...
