What do you do for socialization? Even when my son was in school, he didn't have many friends. There was a brother and sister (twins) who were also learning disabled and they lived up the road from us. He was friends with them from grade school on up, but not too much outside of school. Now that he has graduated, he does not get much socialization outside of our family. I'm stumped for ideas on how he can meet more people who will not take advantage of him.:confused3

Will your son be going to any sort of post high school education? My son has Aspergers and other learning disabilities and tried to go to a Jr. College for a while. That didn't work but we found a fantastic program for Adults with Disabilities. He has really blossomed with that group and gained friends (and a girlfriend). I'd try and see if there is any sort of disability support group in your area that he can join.

Another program that Steven joined was Young Life (his GF has been going for years and asked him to come along). I think that its all over the country, but I could be wrong. It's a christian based group that (at least in our area) brings disabled teens/young adults together with the non-disabled. Steven just went to a camp for a week and had a total blast.

Unfortunately with the age of your child there was not much known about teaching social skills back then. Cooperative play and friendship skills are a big part af any socal skills program for the higher functioning kids (actually all ASD kids). A lot of ASD branches are starting up groups for (mostly young) adults for high functioning people on the spectum adnd they have some skills developement as a part of it.

Thank you, I will check out Young Life and see if there is a chapter near us. My son used to go to camp when he was younger, but did not want to go in high school. I'm not too concerned with finding him a girlfriend right now, but would love for him just to get out with people around his age for some fun. :woohoo:Thanks again for pointing me in a direction.
