What do you do about a barking dog?

So, we have new neighbors that pulled in last night. Today is a down day for us although we are heading out soon. But, their dog has been tied up outside since early this morning and will not stop barking. Big black dog, bark bark bark. The people are there and seem oblivious to the fact that it is barking and barking. Of course, this is making my one dog go nuts. (although she is doing really well). But she is on alert at every bark. Not confrontational at all and don't want to complain, but what do you do?

Well, let's see... there is the direct approach:

knock, knock. "Hello, I'm sorry to have to say this but your dog is being quite disruptive to the peaceful setting that a lot of people have paid a lot of money to enjoy. I thought I would be considerate enough to let you know in person that something needs to be done. Others around you will probably avoid the confrontation and complain to Fort management directly. If you don't want to be forced to board your dog in the kennel I suggest you try to get the situation under control. Have a magical day"

Or the indirect approach:

Sneak over and pour a few beers into his water bowl. Zzzzzz

I absolutely agree with Shan-ta.

Cept I would most likely wait till VERY late at night to knock on their door.:thumbsup2
People aren't stupid about their pets,,, they know that the dog is a yapping pest.

Either you can say something to them, or go to the front desk of managment and complain.

I'm all for dogs at the Fort (since we bring ours every year), but think it's pretty messed up when people just leave their dog outside to bark all day.

You got your emergency roll of duct tape right??? :lmao:

I agree with shan, but if you aren't into confrontation, be the one to call the fort and complain, you paid way to much money to not be able enjoy yourself!!!

I am a major dog lover, as a matter of fact last time we were at the fort we had a neighbor in a pop-up that had their mix breed dog in there while they were at the parks ( which we all know is a no-no) and while we were grilling out, he managed to work the end of the canvas up and jumped out, it took some doing but we finally got him with a hot dog..ha..we kept him with us and just placed a note on their door and at 9:00ish they came and got him.
I could have easily took him over to the kennels but kindness always comes back your way.

Everyone is there to have a good time and I say just be honest with them, go over and see if there is anything you can do to help them because their dog is a real barker, sometimes just being upfront solves the problem.

I've seen Disney po po a lot today. Never saw them in loops as much as we did today. Maybe it's all the barking dogs. If it were me I'd knock and let them know it's disturbing you. If that doesn't work go to the desk.

If you want to go the super non-confrontational route...

People are outside - go over and say "Oh, you're here! Didn't mean to intrude, but your dog's been barking for a long time and I thought something might be wrong"

People are in camper - go knock on the door, see above.

It's ridiculous that people don't hear their own dogs barking or tune it out, but I know people that do (not me - I can't stand it when my dogs bark for more than 10 seconds... at home!)

At least let them know YOU can hear their dog barking. Hopefully they'll say, "Oh, sorry! We kind of tune him out and didn't even realize..."

If they're less than nice about it, I'd walk away and call the front desk.

Just realize that Disney seems to be very non-confrontational about things these days too. I'd push them to at least send someone to talk to the people, but be prepared that their solution may be to offer to move YOU.

It's a crying shame that a very small number of lousy dog owners ruin it for the rest of us. :sad2:

Good luck!

Although I agree that most pet owners are considerate, There is a growing number of them that are mistreating and ignoring their pets.

In the almost 10 years that I have been going to the Fort, I have seen this getting worse. Some people routinely leave their dogs outside all day and night. Barking or not.

I would suggest politely asking them to correct the problem but, If you do go to the Front desk, don't be surprised when they offer to move you and ignore the problem. This is why more and more people are being inconsiderate. Disney won't address the problem.

If they do offer to move you, ask them for an upgraded site. If they think that it will cost them money to move you, then maybe they will address the problem, instead.

I think that's partly because there are a lot more dogs at FW each year. When we first went in 2004, we ran across a few here and there, but nothing like the numbers we saw last month.

This is why more and more people are being inconsiderate. Disney won't address the problem.

Agreed! People learn really quickly that Disney doesn't enforce their own rules, so why should they care? :sad2:

Great idea!!

Bingo, this last trip we had both a barker and a howler and watched many FW maintenance type folks and even one Van delivering a check out sheet to a RV next to a howling dog and nothing was ever done. We complained once to the front desk and NADA was done

I think the only time Disney will do anything is if a dog is left out past mid night with the owners gone and half the loop are complaining to the front desk ... otherwise tough luck.

Thanks guys. YOu are all so funny. I'm here by myself with two kids and don't really want to make enemies. I see they are from Florida and hoping they are just here for a long weekend. But it actually seems to be a bit better. They at least had him in earlier. Of course, when I took my dogs out to walk them, he was back out and barking like mad. But on the good side, my one dog who will bark (chihuahua just doesn't bark much at all ever) seems to be tuning him out so at least it won't be a chain reaction. The owner was out and when barky was doin his thing, he said, "He just wants to play". I said, "oh yeah? Seems like he's got a lot to say". Maybe he got the hint? We'll see how it goes tonight. I once had a lab that was a barker and I know it can be really really hard. But when I had Zoe, I didn't take her places like this that she would annoy others. It is true that it is the minority that ruin it for the majority.
Thanks again for the solutions.

I am purchasing mine next week for our upcoming trip to FW.:cool1:

I love dogs too(I have 3 of my own) and they STAY AT HOME when we vacation, so I don't care anything about hearing other people's dogs bark day and night. From the two trips to FW this past year, I can see that Disney cares less and less about this fact and especially since they are going to make the whole campground pet friendly. There were dogs in every loop and they don't really have pet rules that they enforce anymore.:confused3

I hope it works so that I can enforce the rules myself!:thumbsup2

Ah, that would be because you're a responsible pet owner and a considerate person! :goodvibes

I'm willing to bet that the people that ignore their dogs and let them bark at FW have neighbors at home that hate them too. :(

I'm glad people want to take their dogs with them, but the fact is that not all dogs are good travelers and/or can cope being uprooted from their normal routine and plunked on a line outside a camper in some foreign land.

Also seems that some people use the privilege of bringing their dogs to FW simply as a means of avoiding having to pay to kennel them. <sigh>

There are also those people that have and love dogs, but really don't "get" them. I'm always leery of people who tell me their dog "is friendly and just wants to play" when he's straining on the leash and doing his best Cujo impression. Remember, sometimes a dog is wagging his tail because he's "happy" to bite you!

We work really hard with our dogs to make sure no one is chucking water balloons at our camper at 2am :lmao:

Then again, some people are just plain inconsiderate and will always disturb their neighbors in some way without so much as a sniffle...

Good luck - I hope your neighbors get things under control... or bug out in the morning!
