I have seen the Grand Floridian Gingerbread House and the Yacht and Beach Club Gingerbread Carouel several times. They are so beautiful! I've always wondered what happens to them after the Christmas season. Do they just throw away all that gingerbread? I know they probably can't sell it but I didn't know exactly what happens to it.

We'll be at BCV Jan 2-8 and will probably see the carousel being dismantled. If no one here knows the answer, maybe I can find out!

I am sure it is hard to find that information, because they don't want you to know.

It would take away from the magic......

Really, after sitting in the lobby that long, they would have to throw it away.

I imagine they could recycle it somehow...turn it into mulch or something....

I would guess they just throw it out.. like a PP said because it's been out for so long. Just think of how many people pass through and all of the germs and bacteria it could pick up. :confused3

Also its not completely ginger bread.

Isn't it just a wood frame house with ginger bread glued to it with royal icing?

We seem to recall from our trip in 2008 being told that they were used as food in the Animal Kingdom.

Correct. Check for the FoodTV Holidays @ WDW special shortly after Thxgiving. It shows how the house is constructed (starting in the summer).

It is disposed of, whether thrown out, mulched, incinerated or recycled. It takes 2-3 months to make these displays and they are out on display for about 2 more months. They are sealed with a shellack type product rendering them not edible. If they weren't sealed the display would start to decompose, rot and fall apart long before intended. The sealant keeps the air and moisture out thus preserving them for much longer than they would normally last.

They should make a fruitcake house instead. Then it would be edible 3 years from now let alone 3 months.:lmao:

Is fruitcake EVER really edible? I don't know anyone who has ever eaten it. :confused3

I think it's one of those urban legends. "I heard that if you soak it in brandy long enough, you can actually eat fruitcake".

*shudder*

I guess I am one of the few fruitcake eaters out there. Don't you ever wonder what happens to all those fruitcakes that get regifted each year? That would be me, once they get gifted to me I eat them!

I heard something similar about candy corn. One comedian said it is the only candy, that if you have some left over after Halloween, just pack it up and put it out again next year!
