We mix dry oats and glitter and spinkle it on the lawn. That is how the reindeer are able to find us.

We do this too. We also sprinkle Christmas confetti into it as well.

Every Christmas Eve I put a glass of vegan silk nog out for Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Rudolph loves his silk nog I am a little child and I just adore Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

We made Magic Reindeer Food at our holiday workshop. Here is the poem that goes with it.

Sprinkle on the lawn at night,
the moon will make it sparkle bright.
Santa's reindeer fly and roam,
this will guide them to your home.

We put old fashion oats and glitter in the bag and shake it out on xmas eve. The glitter may be harmful to wildlife so you could use colored sugar crystals as a substitute.

There is a little poem that can be used too (i.e. it would help the parent understand if the child came home from preschool with a bag of oats ^ glitter)

I have also heard that colored sugars can be used in place of the glitter, a good idea if you would be worried about your child eating some of the oatmeal/glitter mixter.

LOL!! This is so funny! Our dog, Milo, has stomach issues and has to only eat hypo-allergenic food. No treats or anything like that (one every now and then doesn't hurt too much). Milo does, however, LOVE ice! Whenever we get some from the fridge, he goes nuts. It's the biggest treat for him! So I'm sure the reindeer loved it too.

Oh, this is so OT but OUR old man dog MILO loves ice cubes too! Same as yours, if you go NEAR the fridge, he comes running (well as fast as the little old guy can go.) He even loves to go "bobbing for treats" when I put a bunch of them in the big water bowl. He will stick his nose all the way under the water to get the cubes. Too funny!

Don't find many other dogs named Milo (and no, ours isn't named from Milo and Otis...)

Back to the reindeer discussion. I vote for apple quarters. I think that sounds normal and besides, the Easter Bunny does carrots... I do think the glitter stuff sounds neat though, but I don't think my Dad would ever have liked glitter spread on his precious lawn.

DS's kindergarten teacher gave the class little bags of this at Christmas. It MUST be what the reindeer eat!

When my kids were in preschool, they made "Reindeer Snack Mix", which consisted of:

1 small bag sunflower seeds
3/4 cup oats
2 tiny snack-size boxes raisins
1 cup small pretzel bites

We sprinkled this around the yard before sundown on Christmas Eve. Those reindeer must have LOVED it, because it was all gone on Christmas morning!

I was going to suggest the colored sugars also. Biodegradable and non toxic.

Suggestion as where to sprinkle it. Saw on a site(dont ask me where I spend toooooo much time on the net) to sprinkle it on your walk or front drive. That way if you live in an area where there aren't a lot of reindeer or other wildlife that will munch on it (cause you know that kiddo is going to say"but it's still there") Santa's helper's (you) can go out and sweep it up after the monsters are in bed. Just leave some remnents here and there. Your neighbors may think you are nuts at 3AM sweeping your walk, but hey, if they complain too much threaten to send the disapointed crying child over to their house for the day. LOL

Rereading my post, just thot of a better idea, and less painful then sweeping in the middle of the nite. Santa has a plate for his cookies, so why cant the reindeer have a bowl for their food. Lots easier to empty that then to sweep. Put it outside and just leave a bit at the bottom--it wont blow around in the wind as bad either.

We just made reindeer food with my class at preschool and what we used was
1/2 cup oats
a few shakes of cinnamon and ginger
red,green and silver glitter
sprinkles

The kids loved making their own bag.

DD did this in preschool also but they added mini marshmallows too.

NO THANK YOU....LOL...I dodged enuf of Bambi's ..ummm-little reminders--at my old place to fufill my quota for the next lifetime. LOL The deer were so brazen there that I had a yard full of like 15 ppl for a yard sale and Faline and her 2 babies came trotting across the lawn about 50 yards away from us all. The little kids loved it and I never saw that many stangers get quiet that quick B4. LOL

Yeah, my yard is like a freaking wildlife reserve. We have a family of foxes, a huge hawk, about 5 deer and all the chipmunks, squirrels and bunnies you could ever want to see living in the woods on my property. What we don't have is a place that's safe to grow a garden!!!!!!!!!!
