Since I'm still single (and starting to suspect I might be staying that way for quite a while yet whether I like it or not) I couldn't really answer that for certain, but based on the weddings I've seen in my immediate and extended family, I would consider $3,000 to be pushing it on the high end. Me and my family are LDS, so the actual weddings take place inside the temple. Generally the receptions will be held in the gym of the local church meetinghouse, and my Mom and her sisters will be doing pretty much all the decorating and food themselves (some of my aunts are big into arts and crafts, and love doing this type of thing,) and the music comes from whoever happens to have their iPod handy. A few things do get farmed out (like the cake and photographer) and there are some other expenses like the dresses and tuxes, but there's no alcohol involved, no catering and no need to pay for renting venues. Usually this also means that most of us pitch in to help clean up after the reception, but I figure that just comes with the territory. The weddings always turn out quite nice, even if they aren't big-budget productions (and quite frankly, I do not think I'd be comfortable if someone was spending $25,000 on my wedding anyway.)
The last wedding in my family was my sister's wedding about a year and a half ago, and that one was quite nice, although it did have the extra expense of everyone needing to travel down to Portland, since the Seattle Temple was closed for remodeling at the time. My brother works as a groundskeeper for the Sixty Acres soccer complex in Redmond, and the reception was held on one of the fields, which worked out quite nicely.
