What did your kids take for lunch today

I pack DD lunch everyday, except 1x every other week she is allowed to buy a school lunch. Those school lunches are gross and very unhealthy !!

Today (same as everyday)
turkey sandwich on whole wheat
water
pop tarts
string cheese
yogurt

My boys eat two snacks that I send, and then eat lunch at school. For snacks I sent:

ds#1 half a bagel with butter, 12 baby carrots, Bungie Fruit, three Chewy ChipsAhoy cookies and a bottle of water

ds#2 half a bagel with cream cheese, 12 baby carrots, Chex mix, three Chewy ChipsAhoy cookies and a bottle of water

They normally just have one snack, but they are having their CMTs this week and last... It's their state testing done for reading, writing and math.

Nothing, she forgot it on the chair, but what we had packed was a fluff sandwich (she hates PB), oranges, juice box, and nilla wafers. I guess she'll be buying instead.

In k-5th grade I usually had:

Turkey sandwich or Strawberry jelly
10 or so oreos or chips deluxe cookies:lovestruc
1 carton of yoohoo
apples or baby carrots

6-8th
french frys from the school cafe
Coke
Fruit rolls? I'm not sure what they where called maybe it was fruit by the foot or something.
cheddar goldfish or chips deluxe

9-12th
Cookies from the school snack bar. I'd go back to school just for those soft cookies.
Poptarts
Gatoraid
French frys
2 lb salad from the grocery store.
Smoothie

My parents where never into counting calories and more into just giving me stuff I'd eat and not let go to waste. I was(still am ) a very picky eater. A while ago I did some work for the local school system and actually peeked into the lunchroom at one point and parents seem to be sending more and more food that just gets thrown in the trash while the kids just buy stuff from the cafe

I glanced into ds' (15) lunchbag this a.m. when he was packing it and saw:

2 mini-bagels w/roast beef lunchmeat
chips
juice pouch
Hostess 100-cal pack of the mini cinnamon cakes

I buy him fruit cups, too, but they only have 25 min. or so to eat, so he doesn't always feel like he has time to eat that.

He doesn't buy lunch often because it's a small private school and they order in from restaurants (Subway, Papa John's, etc.) and we have to pre-order and pre-pay a month at a time and commit to the entire month for each item.

I agree with the PP about how much lunch gets thrown away. I have lunch duty at my DD's school 2-3 times a month, and the kids really only eat for about 10 minutes, after socializing and putting on snow gear for recess. Here's what my daughter took for lunch and snack:

PBJ on homemade gluten free bread
clementine
100% juice box
homemade gluten free crispy rice treat (somewhat healthy b/c made with organic whole grain brown rice cereal :lmao: )
banana

My kids don't have enough time to eat a huge lunch at school. Today I packed each child shaved ham on a bun, a snack size baggy of TJ's everything pretzel thins, a snack size baggy of TJ's ginger cat cookies and a small plastic bottle of homebrewed iced tea. Sometimes I put baby spinach on the sandwich.

Most of these kids sound great at taking and hopefully eating nice balanced lunches. My kids are big pains when it comes to lunch! DD5 goes 3x wk and takes rolled turkey (no bread) black olives and/or cucumber slices, yogurt cup and water. She won't eat much else. DD 10 is pretty good, she'll take a sandwich and fruit or salad with dsg on the side with cut up deli meat or leftover chicken on top. DD12 is the worst, she hates everything! She usually takes a water bottle, 1 poly-o cheese stick and maybe some cereal. She just doesn't like much that can be brown bagged, and says school lunch is "gross" and leftovers taste "old". She gets off the bus at 2:30, so I usually end up cooking a hot meal for her to eat after school, in addition to a hot breakfast before she leaves. Can you say SPOILED!

DD buys these days since her lunch is only .40 and I can't beat that but when she did pack she got:

12 baby carrots
1 juice box
1 sandwich
fruit cup or applesauce cup (or fresh fruit if she wanted that)
pudding or other small treat
fruit roll up

She rarely ate it all but knew the treats were last on the list and they came back home a lot of the time.

Wow! What a great deal - our school lunches are $2.00.

My girls get a sandwich on whole wheat bread, a fruit cup or applesauce or an orange, and then some chips, pudding, yo-go's. Also a 100% fruit juice. These are kids that eat alot and yet this gets them through (I think they talk at lunch more than they eat - they must take after their mother:lmao: )

DD brings her lunch most days. School lunches are brought in from another school. And she says "they're nasty:eek::scared: "

A typical lunch day was:

tuna/chick salad/or lunch meat wrap. Sometimes just meat and cheese rolls (no wrap)
cuke/celery slices w/dressing dip
grapes/apple/orange slices
something sweet that will fit in a snack size ziploc
water bottle

We also have a rule that what ever isn't eaten, has to come home so I can see what she ate.
For awhile her lunch bag would come home empty. I finally asked her if she thought she had enough to eat for lunch. She informed me that she has been sharing her lunch with someone who only brought chips or cookies. Seems like she shares with the same child alot lately. The other day she asked if I could pack an extra wrap, she thinks her friend would like it. I can't amagine what some parents are thinking/or not when they send their children to school without a lunch. I know it's not a money issue. Because our children go to private school. And we have to pay tuition. Now I pack for 2 and if it come home fine, if not, I know atleast the other child is getting a good lunch.

I feel bad today. DD is home sick. All I've been able to think of is what is the other child having for lunch today::sad2:

DsAlmost15:

two burritos made with wholewheat tortillas, some extrasharp cheddar and l/o roast turkey from last night
oranges
some dry cereal, I think it was Smart Start
water in a refillable bottle

Dd13

ditto on the hm burritos
one orange
water

Dd8

cut-up roast turkey
about 3/4 of an orange cut into "smiles"
a small container filled with Smart Start cereal
water
She also keeps a small container with peanuts in her lunchbox, in case she is still hungry. She has days when she eats a LOT and days when she eats only a smidge.

What did your kids take for lunch today?

money!

They all (5 of them) buy their lunches at school.
In middle school it is almost unheard of for the kids to bring lunch. ($2.00-$3.00 per day x 3 boys)

The girls buy lunch also. ($1.75 x 2 girls)

I was starting to figure out how much we spend on lunches and the number freaked me out. Next school year I am setting a budget. The kids can make wise choices and make the money last or end up with nothing by spring. I suggested any money left over from the "lunch fund" could be put towards a fun summer vacation/event, etc.

At our school only the reduced lunch program feeds the kids for $0.40 and those children also get free breakfast.

$2.25 to purchase lunch in school. this equals $11.25 per week.

with prices nowadays more or less:

I'd buy 1 loaf of bread for what? $2.50
Peanut butter for? $2.50
Then she needs a drink box? $2.00 (for a case on sale)
Oh, and a small bag of chips: $4.00 (dorito's snack bags)
and a little something sweet oreos snack packs: $3.00
for a total of $14.00 per week (about) not including the one time purchase of sandwich baggies and a lunch bag.

if we get cold cuts and cheese it's more money...

DD15 is a very picky eater and she eats the same thing for lunch everyday

Lunchmeat sandwich(lowfat turky, ham or lebanon bologna) no cheese on whole grain white bread
sunchips
baby carrots
cookies or some snacky food

bottle of water and sometimes a juicebox (100% juice)

she also eats a whole grain english muffin for breakfast on her way to school.

She also plays softball in the spring so this counts as an afterschool/before practice snack

DS11 buys school lunch almost everyday-he loves the school food and will eat almost anything. Our SD is trying for healthier options and in middle school they have 3 options, hot lunch, sandwich or salad bar.

DD4 took her lunch to preschool this morning. She had:

PB&J on Healthy Kids Bread
Bag of pre-packaged baked chips (I buy the prepackaged to save myself time on portion control - lazy I know!)
Grapes
10-15 baby carrots
Aquafina sports top water bottle (8 oz size)
Raisins

For snack she had an apple

DD2 also took her lunch and she had:

Turkey and Amer. cheese on Healthy Kids Bread
Bag of prepackaged baked doritos
grapes
Aquafina Sports Top Water Bottle (8 oz. size)
Raisins
String cheese

For her snack she had a banana

It does seem like a lot of food for a 2 and 4 year old but they really do eat a lot (their teachers even comment on how much they eat compared to other kids and they waist very little of it) but they are very tall for their age and my 4 year old is on the thin side (she wears 6 slims) and my two year old is average for weight. I try and watch the quality of what they eat more than the quantity. All of the fruits and vegetables as well as the dairy items in their lunches are organic. The chips aren't the best choice nutritionally but at least they are baked. I use the healthy kids bread instead of whole wheat because neither of my kids drink milk unfortunately and this bread has added calcium. I used to be able to buy a Sara Lee 100% whole wheat bread (I think the label said it was Heart Healthy PLUS - not just Heart Healthy) that had the added calcium but haven't been able to find it for about a year now:confused3 . I try my best!

I pack DS12 lunch everyday he says the school lunches are gross. Today he has:
PB & J
Capri Sun
Fruit Roll-Up
Strawbery-Banana Applesauce
100 Calorie pack Doritos

Ds13 took 2 turkey biscuits, cup of pineapple, granola bar and breakfast bar, and lemonade. Last year he ate every day at school and every day the same thing, chicken filet sandwich. But this year he discovered if he taked his lunch he has more time to talk at lunch ( and the girls are at lunch);)

I accidently bought a 6 pack of applesauce cups that wasn't "no sugar added". I looked at the label when I got home and it has 19 grams of sugar, which is the equivalent of 5 teaspoons of sugar. :scared1: If I am going to give my child that much sugar, I'd rather give her a treat that she will see as a "treat" like a cookie, rather than give her fruit that is supposed to be healthy.

I haven't decided if I will throw it in the trash or donate it some where. I mean really - who needs 5 tsp. of sugar in an applesauce cup???

Anyway, for lunch today, DD8 brought some tuna salad and some whole wheat Ritz crackers, a cheese stick, a snack size bag of baby carrots and sugar snap peas, 1/2 apple & 1/2 orange all sliced up in a bag, and a thermos of water. Sometimes a Yoplait yorgurt will make it's way into her lunch box, too. She also loves a salad as long as I slice some olives in it!

Once every 3 weeks or so, I might put a Hershey's kiss in with her lunch as a surprise. Love notes, more often than that!!:lovestruc

Rather than sending treats/desserts to school, or "sometimes food" as my children call then, some evenings we have dessert as a family, even if it is just a bowl of fruit or a couple of girl scout cookies.

Is there anyway you could get something up to the school for her?

I have tried in the past when DD was out. The school resptionist is cold and heartless. She told me it isn't my problem. Nice coming from a Christian school right. So, I don't even try anymore. Tomorrow will be a different day.
