An Atari 2600 video game system.

A VCR. They were $800 in 1979 when I bought it. The last one I bought 6 years ago that ALSO is a DVD burner and player was $119.

The first thing I bought with my first paycheck back in 1979 was a short rabbit jacket. I was a senior in high school and it cost me $49. That with bell bottoms and clogs looked so cool Yeah I know, that was back when people still wore real fur.

Can't remember which one I bought first, but it was either a boom box or a set of golf clubs. Loved them both!

With my first temp and summer jobs in college I spent money in a nice bicycle and over the years got home stereo stuff. Back then spending $600 on a pair of speakers or $400 on a higher end cassette deck wasn't a small thing. It was more than I made in a week, but I didn't have a whole lot of expenses either, where everything I made was basically disposable income.

Partying. I had my first job and first apartment when I was 16. Shared a 2 bedroom apartment with 3 roommates, and we lived about 5 minutes from the Orlando Navy base. Pretty much every night was a huge party with a bunch of sailors in training lol

Don't think I ever 'splashed cash' until we retired. In high school jobs, everything was saved for college expenses. Once out of college, rent, car payment, student loan payment. Then we had mortgage and kids then saving for retirement. Spending lots on travel now!

I can't recall every splashing cash on anything. DH and I have always been very careful with our money. It may sound boring, but we've never felt financially insecure in our 35 years of marriage. We've never had a huge income. We're just good savers and never feel strapped for cash when a need arises. We have our share of fun and vacations too. We just spend carefully and don't go overboard.
