We've got the mind set of been there done that when it comes to Nassau so I'm looking for ideas on how to make this stop one worth getting off the ship for... any ideas? :cool1:

It will be myself and my fiance'.

Howdy,
we have done several things in Nassau that we really enjoyed.
We did the Atlantis dig (aquarium) tour which was very good. i dont usually like aquariums but this was really good and worth seeing. the tour moves quickly, however you can go back through as often as you want at your own pace as long as you leave the wrist band on. The inside architecture of Atlantis is really awesome to see too.
2 hour historical city tour was very good too. We had an excellant guide who gave lots of interesting info and we saw 2 forts and queen anne's staircase and learned the history behind it. There are afew souvenirs for sale along the way too.
Pirate musuem is an A+. Self guided. allow about an hour to see. $12 per adult, not sure about kids. One restroom 1/2 way through the museum plus a nice gift shop and bar at the end of the museum and an open courtyard with stocks and such for picture taking too.
Horse and carriage ride right next to the port. $10 per person, about 20 to 25 minutes long. It is narrated but with the noise of the traffic it is hard to hear the driver, but the ride is fun and and it is an unusual excursion to do. It really was fun. w edid this as we went back to the ship. No waiting just pay the driver and you are off. This place they do wait for a tip!! You can walk off without tipping, but they really expect it, it is your choice. They were very friendly and nice people.
we did the sunshine glass bottom boat, but I do NOT recommend it. The boat was kind of dirty and we didnt see much at all, very disappointing. But fish do travel so I cant really blame the people that there wernt many fish to see. i guess you just take your chances with it.

All of these excursions gave us plenty of time for shopping too.

We got off and walked around the shops for about 45 min just to let the kids say they had been to Nassau. Mostly we tried to get away from the locals wanting to hair braid, take a tour, mon, etc. etc. My kids, 7 and 10 said they were scared the whole time. One friend to a tour to Atlantis and really loved it. Some one on these boards suggested you book a room at the Comfort Suites Atlantis. It is around $170 and you get a wrist band and get to do all the things at Atlantis and then you can shower and come back to the boat. If we hadn't had the kids, this is what we would have done. You could also just stay on the boat. Everything is way less crowded and there are still activities going on. Have a great time! I can't believe mine is over - I have PVD. Post Vacation Depression!!!!!

We didn't like being approached by the hair braiders as aggressively as they did. They even reach out and touch your hair as you scurry by, saying no thanks! Once past them, we did take a horse and carriage ride around the town and did some shopping. Then we headed back to the boat for some time aboard when it was a lot emptier.

Going to Atlantis would have been good I think. Next time. :goodvibes

My DW had one mission when we got to Nassau -- get a pin and T-shirt from the Hard Rock Cafe! :rotfl: Then we got a Starbucks :coffee: , 'cause we're not Nescafe fans (the official coffee of Disney). We walked over to the Straw Market, but did not buy anything. Stopped at the Grocery Store (owned by Krogers, I think) and bought some ground roast Blue Mountain coffee, then headed back to the ship. We lived in Puerto Rico for a few years (I was in the Navy), and have been to St. Thomas, etc., so we decided to spent most of the time exploring the Wonder and relaxing with each other!

BTW, one week ago TODAY at this exact moment, we were eating breakfast at Parrot Cay and getting ready to go ashore at Castaway Cay...

Well, it depends on what you have previously done there.

We started off with the two hour historical city tour, we thought this was excellent. If you have been there before you know traffic is Nassau is very busy and crazy, so nice to have someone else do the driving.

We went to senor frogs, great picture spot overlooking water with the life size frog.

Of course we found some great buys at the straw market.

To the left of the straw market there is a filipino restaurant..the lumpia was outstanding. We didn't find it until our way back to the ship that evening for our palo dinner..if we would have found it earlier we would have had a bigger snack..lol.

For lunch we went to Conch Fritters. About a block or so from the straw market, opposite side of the street. Second floor restaurant, big open window. Great place to enjoy a cold drink and a wonderful meal. Very laid back, no rushing here.

Of course we looked around the shops, and did plenty of alcohol tasting. (and buying).

My sister has done the dolphin swim in Nassau, she loved it and her pics came out excellent.

All in all just a very relaxing day. We loved it.

It's a short walk, 5 to 10 mins if you are a slow walker, my Mother and I would walk it in about 5 mins. and she walk with a cane.

When you walk off the dock, you will see the taxi's and horse stands, to the right, turn right as if your walking to the cabs, I walk on the left side of the strees (cabs on right side) pass the cabs, and on the 2nd street you will see the Harley Davidson store turn left right there, Harley store on the right, Hard Rock Cafe on the left about halfway down the street.
The Store is on the steet and the cafe is upstairs.

On the way off the dock, pick up the free map books for a free gift from the HRC, also if your a HRCPCC member or a All Access member, show your card and you will get 10% off.

Thanks so much for this info, I really appreciate it!! :sunny:

We just got home from the Wonder today!

When we went to Nassau, it was their Labor Day, so a lot of shops were closed.
We went to the Straw Market. I probably wouldn't do this again because no one enjoyed it. It's very stressfull and crouded.

Next time I think that we would take it easy, and possilby take the horse and carriage ride!

Hope that helps!

We've been to Nassau twice...The first time we went the DH and I did the Dolphin Encounter over at Blue Lagoon. It was really, really cool, and I woud definitely recommend it. The last time that we went, the DH and I did the Discover Atlantis tour, and it was okay. I usually like aquariums, but I wasn't really that enthralled by this one. Although, it was neat to get to see parts of the resort, and that was pretty cool.

I don't see anyone mentionng the snorkeling (the boat is called something Queen?) It got a fairly high rating in the last Passporter guide. Has anyone done this one? We were thinking of trying it.

DH and DD did snorkeling while on the Wonder. They thoroughly enjoyed it! It takes a few hours, but they said it was worth it! If you go, take a disposable underwater camera if you want to. (Walmart, Target, etc.) They are more expensive to buy on the boat that takes you there. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Hope this helps!

Has anyone done a beach on their own? I am still looking for the right beach us. We are primarily looking for a beach that is easy to get to and return from on our own. We only plan to spend a couple hours on shore.

Thanks! This is a good thread!

If you want peace and quiet and like animals...try Ardastra Zoo and Garden tours. Nice mini city tour on air-conditioned mini bus and so far the most relaxing tour we have done after 3 visits. Not a single native hawking their wares or services here either. I got some great photo's ( you should see the pink flamingoes & peacocks!) and there is a stop highup on the island at one of the Forts (oops the name eludes me) to take photo's and The Wonder is in the background. Great picture. :sunny:

Haven't done this yet, but I am working on a plan for the same thing. Here is what I have learned:

1)Cabbage Beach is the beach right by Atlantis. You can take a taxi or water taxi (though reviews of these do not recommend them), then walk for 10 minutes or so to the beach.

2)Cable Beach is along the back side of several resorts. You can take a local bus there for $1 pp each way. Some resorts are reported to allow you to use their facilities, especially if you are spending money in their restaurants and casinos.

3)Western Esplanade (aka Junkanoo Beach or Lighthouse Beach) is within walking distance from the ship. You can actually see the ship from the beach and there is a lighthouse directly across from it. Supposedly this is where the locals go. You can also visit the straw market on your way to or from and the nearby restaurants are supposed to be good.

If you do a search using any of these beach names as keywords, you will be able to learn a lot more from people who have actually been there. I'll be monitoring this thread for anyone who posts their opinions as well. Good luck!

We only did the pirate museum. We thought it was ok. Got a cold drink at the hard Rock cafe then headed back.

Nassau isn't my favorite port, but we had a really nice day on our last cruise. We got off the ship early (before it got too hot) and walked over to the Pirates Museum. We enjoyed that. After that we did a little shopping (liquor and rum cake--yum) and headed back to the ship for lunch. After lunch we changed clothes and headed back out to do the Dolphin Encounter (we had booked it directly ourselves, so we had an afternoon slot). That was a highlight of the trip and I'd highly recommend it.
