I was reading that the ship is usually in port at Cozumel from 10am til 10 pm (or roundabout there). We have planned on excursion that starts about 12:30 and lasts 4 hours. What should we do with the rest of our day?

I guess it all depends on what you want to do. We were actually in Cozumel for 14 hours (on 11/06/04 Magic), we docked at 10:30 and the ship left at 12:30. Senor Frogs and Carlos and Charlies are close by, but after dark, when the majority of the other ships leave port, the area does get pretty uncrowded. DH and I took the kids to Paradise Beach for about 4 hours and then we walked around the mall area for another hour. We reboarded and just hung out on board until dinner (early seating). After dinner, we checked the kids into the clubs and DH and I got off the ship to do a little shopping childless. The mall was VERY empty, since we were the only cruise ship left, and the shopkeeppers were VERY pushy since we were usually the only people in a store. After the mall area, got a little too "dicey" for us (DH works in NYC and I used to so it takes a lot for us to consider a place unsafe) so we only stayed off for an hour. Personally I don't know why DCL stays in Cozumel so long, and doesn't leave when most of the other ships leave. There really isn't much to do unless you want to go clubbing, not something you can do with children.

Edited to add: That most of the shops in the Mall area close by 9PM, so there really isn't much at all after that time, except Senor Frogs and Carlos and Charlies.

We did the 3 reef snorkel with Eagle Ray Divers which took up the better part of the day. We got back to the ship about 6pm. Our three boys 15, 13 and 9 loved it as did dh and I. Best snorkeling excursion we've been on. I highly recommend doing this.

Is this somethign that someone with no snorkling experience can do? What if you haven't swimmed in IONS???? Can you still do it and enjoy it???

When we stopped at Coz we didn't dock until after noon. We took a cab and went to the beach for about 4 hours. Got back on the ship just before the downpour started. Took showers, the downpour stopped, and we walked over to Punta Langosta mall (right at the dock) and did a little shopping. Made it back onboard to see the show and had dinner (late seating). We didn't leave the ship afterwards. It was a fine day.

"swimmed in IONS" you'll be giving all of us Oregonians a bad name:teeth: I haven't swam in eons either - except for snorkeling excursions in the caribbean. There's not a lot of places for us to practice snorkeling around here - you can freeze to death in the pacific, swim with the...hey, :crazy2: :scared1: what was that that just floated by... in the willamette:crazy2: :scared1: , get run over by boaters in the columbia. And since we need :umbrella: most of the time (but real Oregonians don't use them) we don't get the opportunity to practice snorkeling.

Just go and have fun in the caribbean. On DCL sponsored snorkeling excursions you are required to wear a buoyance compensator (a flimsy life jacket). You can put as much air into them as you need. Just a little will keep you up on the surface of the water. After a couple of minutes you will feel at home and have a blast!!:hyper:

Oops!!! <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZSYYYYYYYYUS' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_6_202v.gif' border=0></a> I think I meant EONS!!! ;)

Hey Karebear1,

I have a great snorkeling tip that I learned during a vacation on St. Thomas, where I first snorkeled. I am not a strong swimmer and of a weight that the flimsy "buoyancy compensator" doesn't help much. I now pack one of those foam kickboards (flat and doesn't take up TOO much room) and stick it under the front of my "buoyancy compensator." I can swim all day long that way and never tire!

jel0511, to answer your question, occasionally the Magic stays late in Cozumel to give the CREW a chance to get off the ship for a little R & R. They work so hard to make sure we all have a Magical time that occasionally the captain will delay the departure time a little to give them some to get off the ship after finishing their regular duties.

Thanks for the info!!! I kind of figured that was the reason, but wasn't sure!

We were also on the Nov 6th cruise and loved being in port for a full day. Had a nice leisurely breakfast, put the kids in club and did a bit of shopping. The 2 story outside mall is just down the pier, very convenient. We also had a 12:30 excursion (Fury caterman) that lasted 4 hours. Had dinner on ship, early dining. Put the boys back in the club and went back to the mall. We didn't make it far the first time. I hit a store selling t-shirts for $5 and I took too long in there. Anyways, yes the stores close approximately 9pm. So, we went to Hard Rock (right in the same mall complex) and had a drink. Don't forget it's Pirate Night on the ship. So we went back to the ship; party starts at 9:45pm. I personally liked the leisurely day there.

We only spent about 5 hours on shore.

We went shopping in cozumel for about 2 hrs, then took a taxi ($15) out to Mr. Sanchos. It was great. Didn't need the shopping in town really as Mr Sanchos has good shopping.

About 4 we went back to town, and back on the ship.

We had a great dinner on board (Palo's) , then a huge party (Baileys, anyone?) on deck until 2 in the morining with our DIS buddies.

It was a ball!!!!

jim

PS Actually this was a night where we "double-pumped". Went to regular dinner for mexicalfragilistic show and light appetizers.

Then to palos (3rd time that trip!) for dinner.

BTW, did I mention it was Xmas eve?

We had an awesome evening dancing and drinking at Carlos and Charlies with some of the crew. We made the mad dash to get back to the ship in time at midnight-ish... So put the kids in the club and have fun!

We did the DCL Beach Break excursion. It was pretty good. It was from 10:30ish to about 3. Went back to the ship for some R&R, went to early dinner. Checked the kids in the lab. Went to the mall at the port and got back on the ship.

I am a big chicken. I don't like to wander around. I would rather stay on the ship then check out Cozumel. On our upcoming cruise we aren't getting off in Cozumel this time. My dd's were mad that they missed fun things in the club that day. So, we will enjoy the empty ship.

Do be aware that Cozumel seemed much more lax about checking id for the EIGHTEEN drinking age.

Some teens about 15 had obviously been drinking in town that night.

Word to the wise.

Jim
