What can I do to make my MIL wear pants?

Oh please.....consider yourself lucky!!

My MIL and her husband recently (well a year ago) built on a MIL apartment onto our house. She LOVES to garden and is outside ALL the time tinkering in the gardens that are out in the front of the house.

A neighbor friend of ours is constantly in her nightgown/robe and I'm completely fine with that. We've known her over 20yrs and she's always been like that. BUT her nightgown and robe actually covers her up (goes down to almost the floor)

Well, MIL thinks that is cute and thinks she can go outside and garden in HER nightgown as well. THING IS.....her nightgown comes right above the knee and is very, very, very THIN. Now here's the visual.....she's either kneeling on the ground with her "backside" toward the road OR she's always bending over with the same "backside" toward the road AND SHE'S NOT WEARING ANY UNDERWEAR!!!!

I happened to be at an outdoor Tastefully Simple party across the street from my house about a month ago and a couple of the ladies asked if she was MY mother or MIL and made comments on how they've all got quite the show on more than one occassion.

When I told MIL, she had the nerve to tell me, "Well, you should have told me that people could see me like that" HELLOOOOOOO, I didn't realize that at 60yrs old, I had to tell you to wear underwear while bending over with a short nightgown on!!!!!!! It's really common sense.

How awful!

That reminds me...I used to stay at my Granny's during the summer. When she'd change clothes or come out of the shower, her curtains would often be open. When I'd comment to her about it, Granny's response always was, "If they haven't seen it before, they won't know what it is!"

I love and miss that woman.

That is gross. What does your DH say? I think my dh would freak out and yell at his mom.

I don't think it would make any difference. She gets all pitiful and somehow it is all your fault.




I am now plotting to steal the housecoats! She has all linds of cute...socially acceptable...pjs that have capri type pants. If I steal the housecoats, it is that or nothing. Pray she doesn't choose nothing!

How about, instead of euphemisms or expecting her to simply understand you're offended or grossed-out, "MIL, we know you want to be comfortable, but nobody wants to see your underwear. Please start wearing pants with your housedress".

When I was twelve - a VERY long time ago - my grandmother came to babysit for us while my parents went somewhere. She was in the den watching TV, and I must have been in the kitchen; I went to ask her something. She, too, was wearing a housedress. Unlike the OP's MIL, it was entirely open ... and let's just say that if she'd been wearing anything at all underneath, I wouldn't remember the incident all these many years later

Would that I could.... lol, she is only recently home from nursing home/rehab. Home health is coming some, but most of this falls on DH and me. I am home for the summer, so....there may be more vents to come. It is a little easier when you can joke about it.


I think you are right, next time I get a flash of undies and am just going to tell her she needs to wear pants.

Be thankful, my grandmother believed in going comando in her housecoat. Inside, outside in the garden....the only time she put on undies was if she was going out somewhere. It was very strange.
