What camera to take??

This is always something I have to think about as well. We usually go for 4 days. I also just bought DD a nice durable P&S with full intent on it being our main camera for most days. ;) I usually take my DSLR one day and plan to have an eye on photos day. For instance the day we will be celebrating DDs birthday. But it's nice to have the freedom to not worry about photos too. I've had good look with Photopass as well.

I should add when I do have the DSLR I keep it in an awesome backpack camera bag. The backpack also holds everybody's "stuff."

The big exception is water rides. Someone has to stay with the camera. But we can easily plan no water rides on a day I have the DSLR.

I've never been disappointed in the pictures we end up with.

Do you not take your DSLR on water rides?

Good excuse for a weather-resistant/water-proof camera!

I have a Pentax K-5 that is weather-resistant. It lived up to that claim on our Disney Magic Med sailing a couple weeks ago. Thunderstorms and pouring rain in Rome and Venice. I was dry under a Disney-provided poncho, but held the camera out in the rain so I could get some photos. The strap got soaked, but the camera kept clicking away with no problems. My arms seemed less weather-resistant than the camera :lmao:

I got this for my birthday last month - Sony DSC-RX100M III Cyber-shot Digital Still Camera. I am planning to take that in lieu of my dslr.

We have 4 kids and there is so much gear that goes along with that for the flight and then in the park, the more compact I can make other things, the better. Also, I am thrilled not to feel like I have to carry the big dslr everywhere while we park the stroller.

I got the idea about getting a great p&s from guys that work at camera shops. I was in a couple of different stores and it's come up what they took to Disney and both have the dslrs but chose to take really great p&s. I just didn't realize how good the shots from a great p&s can look.

I would for sure take more than your phone though. Those shots don't look great blown up, and of course the quality varies depending on your phone.

Yea - The Canon S110 is a good little P&S - between that / my hero3 / and the compact 40mm lens I think i will be good. Sure dont think ill be lugging my 70-200 lens around the park.

P&S are good for snapshots and CANNOT compete in the dark with a DSLR. They are great, don't get me wrong in full light, but their sensors in any degree of darkness are the HORRIBLE.

Yup.....this is why im taking my DSLR and a lens with a 2.8 wide open.
I could rent the 1.2L for the trip......;)

No I do not. Not even in a camera bag.

Have ya been on Grizzly?? :scared1: I'm actually considering :gasp: a poncho for that ride next time. Although no not really. If you're gonna go, go big!!

We are going on our first trip to DL in Dec. and I'm pretty sure we will bring my Nikon D5100, Coolpix P7700, and our 2 Olympus TG's.

Where does everyone put their DSLR's on the big rides? Would a sling backpack protect it on the rough rides?

Define "big" rides. On anything BUT screamin, its around my neck or in my hands shooting during the ride (yes, splash mtn included). To the previous poster, yes, I've been on Grizzly (our record is eight times back to back), and yes, you can get wet even WITH a poncho. I have never taken my DLSR, but that's because its the last ride of the day for my eldest daughter and I, and we sneak out of the room while mommy puts the younger girls to bed, so I haven't ever brought it, but there's not much to keep me FROM bringing it with a poncho.

SLR all the way for me. I love the art of photography and I can't seem to capture it on my Iphone and I stopped bringing my point and shoot. Something that helped me on our Boston/Cape Cod/Martha's Vineyard trip was I bought a backpack. It helped tremendously for carrying around purposes vs. my old gadget bag. Good luck with your decision. Most importantly stop and smell the roses....I mean churros! :thumbsup2

You should try Screamin photography next time. It's a lot of fun. Just hold on tight! :)

I can't get the body up to my face with the restraints. I do shoot the ride, just with my P&S. I'll try with the SLR next time and spray and pray I get good shots.

It was big time spray and pray for me. I used a wide angle lens to allow the greatest room for error in framing. But it was comical that I every time I lifted the camera on that inversion, centrifugal force would force it down, so I had to be really quick.

It helps of course that we rode 6 times in quick succession that morning during early entry. What didn't help is that it was 38 degrees. :santa: Oy. My frozen ears took a beating that morning!

After seeing these shots, I'm going to stop my camera down a few, and spray and pray. Such great shots. I may need to upgrade to a faster card just so the buffer doesn't get behind.

I shoot with a 7D - no worry about the buffer on that thing especially with jpegs.

I'm planning on taking my DSLR, since I'm carrying all around the world pre Disney I'm not going to leave it in my room. My 6 yr old has a Panasonic lumix waterproof/dust proof that takes pretty good pics, I'm thinking of giving that to my 8 year old & getting Ds 6 the newer version as he takes great pics. Hubby will have his ph or rab one of the kids cameras. What lenses do I take though?

Nice one Mike! Love the high action view of Carsland and ToT!

I shoot in RAW with a T2i and I had no issues with my buffer filling. Honestly, you don't get enough off on that inversion before your camera is forced down to worry about that piece of it. Of course it helps to be able to do the ride several times in a row so you can check the results and adjust how you're holding the camera in between attempts.
